Nutrition | Video: Nutrition 101 - Supplement advice

School is in, and we're signed up for Nutrition 101 with our personal trainer Dan Smullen, who tells us all about the supplements we should be taking.

Anyone who works out knows that the effort you put in at the weights bench needs to be matched by what you're doing in the kitchen. But what about when you've just finished a tough workout and you need to fuel yourself, stat?

Probably the most important supplement will be the whey protein shakes. If you're going to go from zero physical activity to working hard, it's going to hurt your muscles big time, and the protein shake after you hit the gym is going to help you recover much quicker. It also encourages you to build muscle, which aids weight loss.

Taking this post-workout shake is going to be easier than grilling up a chicken breast, and it also means that you can get it within that 30-minute window after you finish which is when your muscles will respond quickest to whatever food supply you take in.

It's also key to look after your body's vitamins and minerals, which is why Opti-Men is going to keep you healthy as you push your body for more. As you start to lose weight, you can also lose key vitamins, but this supplement can get them back in your system with a blend of nutrients specifically designed to give men the things they need to recover.

Glutamine will keep inflammation down and support your immune system. If you want to succeed, you have to constantly push yourself, and with these capsules you can ensure that your body is ready for the challenge when you walk through the door of the gym. It increases strength as well as endurance, so the next time you need to make a last ditch tackle to stop your team from conceding, you'll have that extra burst of energy.

Finally, if you've found that the last set is the most difficult, or you can't get through those final reps, then add Amino Energy to your cupboard and kiss goodbye to your previous personal bests, because they're about to get smashed. With some caffeine to give you a boost of at least 30 per cent and amino acids to burn fat, you'll notice your energy, endurance and focus will be at new levels, pushing you to your absolute max.
