NHL and players meet again

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL and the players association started meetings for the second consecutive day in an attempt to end the ongoing lockout.

The sides were not expected to discuss the core economic issues on Saturday that are at the root of the dispute that threatens the start of the regular season.

Some progress was made on Friday on secondary issues related to player safety and drug testing, areas that weren't expected to be contentious.

On Friday, the league and union held two sessions that totaled about five hours and included a private meeting between Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr.

"I wish we had spent today on what we consider to be the more meaningful issues, but it is what it is," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said on Friday. "We really need to hear from the players' association on those. We need some kind of sign that they are prepared to compromise their economic position because we haven't had that since Aug. 14.

"We'll see if we get there."

At least they got back to talking ? which hadn't happened since a few days before the NHL locked out its players on Sept. 16.

"It was a good day," Daly said. "We went through a lot of the areas we'd covered over the summer. We started closing off some agreements in some areas, and some continued areas of disagreements in others. It's part of the process."

All of the issues, big and small, must be ironed out before hockey can get out of the board room and back on the ice. So while the divisive topics still need to be tackled, the smaller ones have to be worked on, too.

That was the goal on Friday, and will continue to be this weekend when talks continued at the league's New York office.

"I don't want to use the adjective optimistic, but it was a productive discussion," NHL Players' Association special counsel Steve Fehr said on Friday. "We had a good session, and hopefully it will continue and build momentum."

A handful of players also took part in Friday's talks.

When the sides talk this weekend, they still aren't expected to dive into the splitting up of hockey-related revenue.

Players received 57 percent of the net hockey-related revenues in the previous collective bargaining agreement, and owners want to bring that number down under 50 percent.

The sides aren't moving closer to a compromise while they talk about other issues.

And that is where the frustration lies. The NHL is waiting for the players' association to make a counterproposal to one the league made in the previous bargaining session more than two weeks ago.

"We can't make them talk about what they don't want to talk about," Daly said. "In fairness, we do have to cover these issues if we're going to reach an agreement. What we're doing today is important, it's just not the most important things we can be doing.

"We've made at least two consecutive moves in significant dollars in their direction, and they haven't moved a single dollar in our direction since Aug. 4."

Former player Mathieu Schneider, now an NHLPA special assistant to the executive director, said Friday morning that there were agreements on more rigorous drug testing, expanding it to parts of the year during which testing is not currently done.

Neither side sees the use of performance-enhancing drugs as a problem in the NHL.

"We're in agreement that it's not an issue in our sport," Schneider said. "I think it's in the players' best interest as well as the sport to close off any possible time during the year where players could use."

Monetary issues are not expected to come up for discussion in this round of talks. Neither side has indicated it is prepared to make a new offer now regarding how to split up the more than $3 billion annual pot of hockey-related revenue.

"In general, when you're dealing with collective bargaining, when you start to have agreements on smaller issues, it can lead to bigger issues," Schneider said, "but it's still too early to say."

The lockout was put in place on Sept. 16 and Saturday's talks come two days after the league canceled the remaining preseason games. The regular season is to start Oct. 11.

If a deal isn't reached soon, regular-season games will be in danger of being lost. The NHL canceled the entire 2004-05 season because of a lockout that eventually led to the collective bargaining agreement that expired this month.

"The calendar continues to tick along," Daly said. "My guess is as time goes on, regular-season games are at risk. I don't think it can be any more urgent than where we are now. We've had that level of urgency for a long time. In some respects you can meet all you want, but if there is no compromise or no movement or no new proposals I am not sure at the end of the day what you're meeting over.

"There is a very high degree of urgency certainly on our side. I can't speak for their side, but I am sure they would tell you there is a degree of urgency there, too."

Steve Fehr contended that the players' association is willing to discuss any issues at any time to try to make a deal soon.

"We can discuss the core issues whenever they want to do it," he said. "Bargaining is not ping pong. There are no rules on who has to serve."

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Republican vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan is telling a national sportsmen group that he and Mitt Romney would work to prevent any more restrictions on hunting and gun ownership.

Speaking to around 1,000 members of the the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance at a rally on Saturday night, Ryan said he will fight any more restrictions to public lands access for hunters.

The Wisconsin congressman, a hunting enthusiast, says he will also fight encroachments on individual's right to bear arms.

Ryan's speech brought him back to Ohio after campaigning earlier this week in Lima, Cincinnati and the Dayton area. He spoke earlier in the day to supporters in another swing state, New Hampshire.

Tips to Increase Your Debt Management Skills | Debt Consolidation ...

Increasing your debt management skills is one of the best ways to rid yourself of overwhelming debt and develop enhanced finance management techniques. It is not necessary to do a complete financial overhaul in order to see marked improvements in your overall finances. Instead, by making some simple changes and practicing new financial habits, it is possible to increase your debt management skills and pay down your debt.

Debt management skills can be learned easily and involve practicing new and improved financial habits. One of the first tips towards making beneficial financial changes is to develop a budget. A budget can be simple or complex depending on how many constrictions are placed on your spending. However, a simple budget can be just as effective as a detailed one and can help you get back on track towards better finances. Create a budget that has separate categories with spending limits for each category. When creating your budget, it is best to give yourself realistic spending parameters to make it easier to adhere to your plan.

Another tip to increasing your debt management skills is to attend as many financial workshops as possible. Professional financial managers and credit counselors have years of experience in offering advice for individuals facing debt challenges. By taking the time to attend some of these workshops or to set up one on one counseling sessions, you can learn increased debt management skills and tactics for paying down debt. To find a workshop in your area, visit your local credit union, homeowner assistance program or social service agency.

Overpaying on debt is a good way to enhance your debt management skills. By paying more than the minimum on your debts each month, it is possible to see a dramatic decrease in your overall debt. Often the culmination of finance charges and interest rates can cause the total amount of debt owed to be larger than the original loan amount. The only way to combat this is to overpay on your debt in order to get ahead of the interest rate and lower the debt load. Doing this consistently will see a marked decrease in your debt overtime and will lead to self-discipline and increased debt management skills.

Increasing debt management skills is possible over time by taking educational courses and creating new spending habits. Although the results won?t show up instantly, with commitment and dedication, your credit score will increase and your finances will be more balanced.

Credit and Finance News Blog ? Blog Archive ? 5 credit tips for ...

By Andrew Housser

As last spring?s college graduates settle into first jobs, chances are that many also are learning to use their first credit cards. Getting your first credit card can feel like an adult rite of passage. On the plus side, having ? and using ? a credit line can put you on the road to building a good credit history. This, in turn, will make it easier in the future for you to qualify for a car loan, a mortgage, or a loan to start your own business.

Of course, if you misuse this credit ? such as by making payments late (or not at all), or maxing out cards ? the reverse can happen. Mistakes can stay on your credit report for up to seven years and lower your credit score. This score, which represents your credit risk, is based on several factors: your past payment history, total outstanding debt, length of credit history, and the types of loans and credit you have. As you gain experience using a credit card, set a goal to keep your score in the over-700 range. With that score, it is more likely that you will receive preferred rates on car loans and mortgages, as well as have better status when employers or?????. continues on KFMB News 8

Southwest Airlines Sued By Passenger After She Burns Herself With ...

Posted: September 26, 2012

Southwest Airlines

A female Southwest Airlines passenger from Tennessee has filed an $800,000 lawsuit against the company after she was burned by an extremely hot cup of tea.

Angelica Keller was traveling from Nashville to New Orleans when she ordered a cup of tea during a Houston stop over. While seated in a window seat aboard Flight 955, Keller ordered her hot drink which was brought to her in a cup of??extremely hot water? sitting in another cup which contained the tea bag and condiment packets.

In her complaint, Keller?s attorney rights:

?Plaintiffs efforts to extricate the tea bag from its position of being wedged between the tilted paper ?hot cup? of extremely hot water and the shorter clear plastic soft drink cup, the extremely hot water spilled into her lap at her groin area.?

The spill led to second degree burns and skin blistering which left scares.

According to?Southwest spokesman Chris Mainz

?Our Customers? comfort is our top priority at all times, and we safely serve about 100 million drinks onboard every year. The referenced event is unfortunate, and we are currently reviewing it. We can?t provide additional details due to the pending lawsuit that was filed.?

Keller was seated in the front row of a Southwest flight, that row of seats does not have food trays, which the plaintiff says contributed to the injury.

Southwest Airlines claims that the temperature of its hot tea has never been an issue in the past.

The lawsuit is asking for?$300,000 in property damages, medical bills, injuries, and pain and suffering. The plaintiff is also demanding $500,000 in punitive damages.

Google honours Parry Sound with eTown Award for embracing ...

TORONTO - Parry Sound is one of 5 Canadian regional towns to win a Google eTown Award, Google Canada announced today.

At a time when the Internet is spurring economic growth, this new Google award is designed to recognize those towns where small businesses are investing in online tools and resources to find new customers, grow their business, and improve their operations.

?We?re delighted to recognize Parry Sound?s accomplishments in embracing the web across their small business community,? said Chris O?Neill, managing director of Google Canada. ?We know that the Internet is going to contribute massively to Canada?s economic growth, so these eTown awards are designed to showcase those communities leading the way forward.?

To highlight this vital economic activity, Google looked at thousands of cities and towns across Canada to identify one town in each of five regions that demonstrated strong engagement and potential for growth in the digital economy. With its online advertising service, Google AdWords, the Canada Get Your Business Online initiative, and products such as Google Apps for Business, Google works with businesses across Canada to help them succeed online.

The other four Google eTown regions and?winners in Canada are:

Atlantic: Moncton, New Brunswick

Qu?bec: Dorval

Prairies: Canmore, Alberta

BC & The North:? Duncan, British Columbia

Sunny Point Resort in Parry Sound is a family-owned resort that has been in operation since 1966. Current owners Andy and Susan Vitch have been using AdWords since 2009. Mr. Vitch said: ?Tourism is one business where the Internet can be the most beneficial to a small guy like me. I can compete with the bigger resorts. Our site may not be as flashy, but it?s out there. You just have to get people to your site, which is why AdWords is so useful to our business.?

Earlier this year, the Internet Economy in the G-20 report published by the Boston Consulting Group predicted that Canada?s Internet economy will grow 7.4 per cent?annually through 2016, meaning businesses with an online presence will benefit most and contribute more to future Canadian economic growth.

At the same time, the Canada Get Your Business Online campaign has estimated that more than half of Canadian small and medium-sized businesses still lack a website, raising concerns that many SMBs could lose out unless they take steps to make their businesses accessible online and from mobile devices.

MP Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board and MP for Parry Sound?Muskoka, was presented with the award in Ottawa last week and said: ?I am very proud to receive this award on behalf of Parry Sound, a community that has gone out of its way to embrace the digital economy. The internet is a powerful tool for businesses and communities looking for new and innovative ways to connect and provide services and Parry Sound is a great example of what can be accomplished.?

In recognition of Parry Sound?s eTown status, Google Canada, in cooperation with the Parry Sound Area Chamber of Commerce, will present the award to the city and Mayor Jamie McGarvey on Oct. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at the Municipal Office for the Town of Parry Sound.

Local businesses are invited to attend and meet Google experts who will be on hand to provide advice on growing your business online.

Alexa Thompson discusses the ways that learning English in an online or offline setting can benefit non-native speakers

The Internet platform has become an essential tool for learning and teaching online, as noted by English Virtual Community. In this post, Alexa Thompson discusses the ways that learning English in an online or offline setting can benefit non-native speakers. For instance, learning English can lead to outsourced jobs that big businesses make available overseas. To read more about online English school from Alexa, visit the website she maintains about English education.

English as a second language teachers, English Language Learners

Did you know you can get a foreign job based on your ability to speak English? Many work opportunities are available to English speakers from almost any country in the world. Thanks to the Internet and impact outsourcing, more foreign speakers of English are coming into contact with businesses from North America and Europe, making English as a Second Language courses extremely valuable for both students and native English speakers.

The last three decades have brought an unprecedented amount of international trade. Currently, international deals comprise 60% of the world?s GDP, according to the New York Times? blogger, David Bornstein. That figure is more than double what it was just 30 years ago. Within this massive amount of global trade, a new category is emerging: business outsourcing, with an emphasis in impact outsourcing.

Impact outsourcing typically brings together English-speaking professionals from emerging nations, like India, China, and the Phillipines, and businesses in the North America and the UK. People in these countries have been able to connect online with corporations looking for a myriad of tasks to be completed at a reduced price that still exceeds the wages typical in their home country. These deals benefit everyone, as employers receive work for cheaper rates, and employees achieve financial stability with relatively higher pay. Impact outsourcing is a win-win, and it already accounts for $4.5 billion in international trade annually.

What makes impact outsourcing a real possibility is the widespread acceptance of English as the international language of business. In fact, native English speakers account for a relatively small percentage of total English-speaking populations. According a Boston Globe article, in 2007, there were 400 million native English speakers in the world, 300 to 500 million fluent ESL speakers, and 750 million speakers who knew English as a foreign language. Those numbers have presumably increased in the last 5 years and will continue to increase.

The other principal factor that makes impact outsourcing possible is the Internet. Because information can be transferred with ease and at almost no cost, employers can communicate freely with workers from across the globe. A number of websites have used this to their advantage, by creating procurement portals that bring together employers who need tasks to be accomplished and contract employees who are looking for work. oDesk and Elance are a couple of examples of these websites, some of which create opportunities to outsource writing, organization, computer programming, design, engineering, and many other tasks. Often, jobs are given on a temporary-to-hire basis, meaning that successful contractors often receive future work and long-term, dependable business relationships. Business on these websites, as in most international venues, operates primarily in English.

A number of businesses have set up shop to support this type of business. Businesses such as Digital Divide Data and Samasource work in countries such as Cambodia, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Kenya and South Africa to build skills required for impact outsourcing, including English-speaking and computing, the two main components of outsourcing contracts.

Impact outsourcing will only continue to grow in popularity in emerging and developed nations. As it reaches more people and businesses, families in the developing world will transform and gain real financial stability as they contribute to the profits of established businesses.

Schwarzenegger reveals how Shriver confronted him over secret son

In his new autobiography, Arnold Schwarzenegger lays out exactly how he was blindsided by ex-wife Maria Shriver when she waited until he left office to set up a couples' counseling session to confront him about the child he secretly had with the couple's housekeeper.

In the book called "Total Recall," due out next week, Schwarzenegger says that it was on Jan. 4, 2011, when he and Shriver entered a therapist's office for a meeting initiated by her the day after his term as governor of California came to an end.

"The minute we sat down, the therapist turned to me and said, 'Maria wanted to come here today and to ask about a child -- whether you fathered a child with your housekeeper Mildred,'" the actor and former pol wrote in the book. "I told the therapist, 'It's true.'"

Schwarzenegger says he then started groveling, telling his wife that he had "screwed up" and that she was the "perfect wife," and that he was still "turned on" by her. It didn't work, and Shriver separated from him, and later filed for divorce.

In the book, Schwarzenegger says he had sex with housekeeper Mildred Baena in 1996 in the family guest house while Shriver and their kids were away on vacation and he was in town filming "Batman and Robin."

Schwarzenegger, 65, says that for years he tried to convince himself that Baena's husband was the father of their son, Joseph. But when the boy grew up and the resemblance to Schwarzenegger was so strong, he writes, "I realized there was little doubt that he was my son."

This hiding of the tryst and his secret speculation about his biological son all happened while Schwarzenegger watched as Shriver defended him from allegations of infidelity.

"I am my own woman," Shiver said in a 2003 appearance on "Oprah." "I have not been, quote, "bred," to look the other way."

Schwarzenegger says he kept the affair and the fact that he was Joseph's father a secret partly because he was embarrassed, and also because he didn't want to face up to his wife's family, the Kennedys.

"Instead of doing the right thing, I'd just put the truth in a mental compartment and locked it up where I didn't deal with it every day," he writes.

In the book, Schwarzenegger also notes a parting shot he says Shriver, 56, took after their marriage ended. During the funeral for her father, Sargent Shriver, his now ex-wife described the respect he had for her mom.

"The way he admired her and respected her, when I think about it today, it actually takes my breath away," she said.

Schwarzenegger, who was in the audience, says that comment might have been "partly directed at me."

Schwarzenegger says he still doesn't know why he cheated, but that it was probably a mixture of stupidity and arrogance, he writes.

The star also writes that he still hopes to reunite with Shriver.

"You can call this denial," he writes. "But it's the way my mind works."

There are 1,440 minutes in a day and at least 30 minutes of the 1,440 minutes should be dedicated to moderate physical activity; you should try to carve out 30 minutes 5 day a week. Moderate physical activity can be mowing the lawn, swimming, cycling, canoeing or dancing. The key is to be active, have fun and possibly improve your quality of life. Clinical trials have shown that losing weight and improving your fitness level may delay or prevent type 2 diabetes, may reduce high blood pressure and may prevent some cardiovascular problems. It is never too late to start and become physically fit, but if you have been inactive for a while start out slow and have fun so that you will stick with it. Of course, the standard is ?before beginning any exercise program an evaluation by a physician is recommended to rule out potential health risks?.

?Why exercise anyway?

?A formal definition; ?Exercise is physical activity that is planned, structured and repetitive for the purpose of conditioning any part of the body. Exercise is used to improve health, maintain fitness and is important as a means of physical rehabilitation?.

?If you are not interested or do not like being involved in a structured workout program you can simply start increasing your physical activity be taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking a little further away and walking, don?t use your parents handicap sign, if you take public transportation get off the bus or train a stop further than you normally do and walk. If you still need convincing that physical activity has benefits check out the Health Information at http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/exercise/HQ01676

?In New York super-size sodas are banned, healthy snacks are being put in vending machines at schools and school lunch programs are offering healthy alternatives. ?The dietary and physical activity behaviors of children and adolescents are influenced by many sectors of society, including families, communities, schools, child care settings, medical care providers, faith-based institutions, government agencies, the media, and the food and beverage industries and entertainment industries?.? The banning of partially hydrogenated oils (trans. fats), the action of Mayor Bloomberg in NYC and the action of school administrators is a start.

Cards win in 10th to bolster playoff bid

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:45 p.m. ET Sept. 22, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals were headed for another heartbreaking loss when Carlos Beltran turned it around with one big swing.

When Beltran got back to the dugout, starting pitcher Adam Wainwright showed his appreciation for the timely play.

"I kissed him right on the cheek. I'm not afraid to tell the whole world, either," Wainwright said. "I wanted to kiss him on the mouth. He saved me, he saved the team today."

Beltran hit a tying solo homer in the ninth and Jon Jay doubled in the winning run an inning later as the Cardinals bolstered their bid for another playoff appearance with a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

St. Louis increased its lead for the second NL wild card to 2 1/2 games over Milwaukee, which lost 10-4 at Washington. The Los Angeles Dodgers are three back following a 6-0 loss at Cincinnati.

The defending World Series champion Cardinals have 10 games left in the regular season. They bounced back from an agonizing 11-inning loss at Wrigley Field the previous day.

After Matt Carpenter and Brian Anderson drew two-out walks from Jaye Chapman (0-1), Jay doubled down the right-field line.

"If we'd have lost that game, I don't think I'd sleep at all tonight," Wainwright said.

Mitchell Boggs (4-1) got the last out of the ninth. Jason Motte struck out the side in the 10th for his 39th save.

Beltran connected for his 30th homer, a one-out shot off Carlos Marmol that wrapped just inside the right-field foul pole. Marmol had been successful on 19 straight save chances dating to May 2.

"It's no secret you're going to get a fastball and you're gonna get a slider," Beltran said. "We were trying to put ourselves in a position to at least score a run. I was able to get a pitch to hit. In my mind, I'm just trying to put myself on the basepaths."

Before Beltran's drive, it appeared the Cardinals were going to blow another game against their arch rival in the most crucial time of the season.

St. Louis lost in dramatic fashion on Friday. Fernando Salas gave up a two-out, two-strike, two-run homer to Darwin Barney in the ninth to send the game to extra innings, and the Cubs won 5-4 in 11 on David DeJesus' RBI single.

Both Boggs and Motte were unavailable.

"It was tough yesterday not putting (Boggs and Motte) in there, but we're gonna have to do that," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "There are gonna be days where someone else has to step up."

On Matheny's 42nd birthday, St. Louis improved to 10-10 in September after going 18-8 in the final month last season, when the Cardinals squeezed into the playoffs on the final day of the season.

DeJesus' solo homer started a three-run rally in the sixth as Chicago nearly came from behind to knock off the Cardinals for a second straight day.

Travis Wood again failed to win at Wrigley, though he held St. Louis to two earned runs over five innings, striking out seven. He entered with an 0-5 record and a 6.08 ERA over his last seven home starts, but finished with a no-decision when the Cubs rallied.

"Every win counts. We're battling as hard as we can," Wood said. "We played pretty good today. We ended up taking a lead, just couldn't hold them off. That's a good team over there."

All-Star catcher Yadier Molina of the Cardinals left in the ninth with lower back spasms. He exited after trying to get away from a pitch from Marmol that nearly hit him.

"It was more low back. I don't know what it was, it just tightened up on him," Matheny said. "Trying to react at max speed doesn't help, either. Trainers were encouraged, thought it's something we'll be able to take a look at in the morning and adjust from there."

St. Louis stranded 13 batters and missed several chances to take command of the game. James Russell struck out pinch-hitter Shane Robinson with runners on the corners to end the eighth, while Marmol got Tony Cruz to fly out with the go-ahead run on third to end the ninth. Cruz pinch-hit for Molina.

Wainwright is winless over his last five starts. He allowed four runs and six hits over seven innings. He hasn't lost in his last eight starts at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs need to win four of their last 10 games to avoid the third 100-loss season in franchise history and first since 1966.

"We came back. I just loved the way the guys battled the whole game," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "Win or lose, the guys are battling and not making it easy on anybody."

NOTES: Cardinals RHP Jake Westbrook (strained right oblique) was shut down just a few pitches into his bullpen session. He will be re-evaluated Sunday. RHP Lance Lynn will start in Westbrook's place Monday at Houston. ... Cardinals RHP Chris Carpenter felt "good sore" a day after his season debut Friday, according to Matheny. He is scheduled to pitch Wednesday in Houston. ... Barney's errorless streak at second base reached an NL-record 137 games, four short of the major league record set by Detroit's Placido Polanco in 2007.

Obama suggests Romney is out of touch with America

MIAMI (AP) ? President Barack Obama cast Mitt Romney on Thursday as an out-of-touch challenger for the White House and an advocate of education cuts that could cause teacher strikes to spread from Chicago to other cities. The Republican countered that the U.S. economy "is bumping along the bottom" under Obama, and he predicted victory in the fall.

The two men eyed each other across hotly contested Florida, a state with 29 electoral votes, more than any other battleground in the close race for the White House.

"When you express an attitude that half the country considers itself victims, that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is maybe you haven't gotten around a lot," the president said. That was in response to a question about Romney's recent observation that 47 percent of Americans pay no income tax and believe they are victims and entitled to an array of federal benefits.

Obama spoke at a town hall-style forum aired by the Spanish-language television network Univision.

For his part, Romney was eager to move past that controversy, which has knocked him off stride. He disclosed plans for a three-day bus tour early next week through Ohio with running mate Paul Ryan and sought to return the campaign focus to the economic issues that have dominated the race all year.

At a fundraiser in Miami, Romney looked ahead to his televised head-to-head encounters with Obama this fall. "He's a very eloquent speaker, and so I'm sure in the debates, as last time ... he'll be very eloquent in describing his vision," the Republican said. "But he can't win by his words, because his record speaks so loudly in our ears. What he has done in the last four years is establish an economy that's bumping along the bottom."

Less than seven weeks before Election Day, polls make the race a close one, likely to be settled in eight or so swing states where neither man has a solid edge. Obama has gained ground in polls in some of those states since the completion of the Democratic National Convention two weeks ago, while Romney has struggled with controversies of his own making that have left Republicans frustrated at his performance as a candidate.

Still, there were fresh signs of weakness in the nation's job market as the two candidates vied for support in Florida.

The Labor Department said the number of Americans seeking unemployment fell only slightly last week, to a seasonally adjusted level of 382,000, suggesting that businesses remain reluctant to add to their payrolls. The four-week average rose for the fifth straight week to the highest level in nearly three months.

After more than two days of struggle, Romney seemed eager to leave the 47 percent controversy behind as he appeared at the Univision forum Wednesday night. "'My campaign is about the 100 percent in America," he said firmly.

But Obama made his most extensive comments to date on the subject since the emergence of a video showing Romney telling donors last May that as a candidate his job wasn't to worry about 47 percent of the country.

"Their problem is not they're not working hard enough or they don't want to work or they're being taxed too little or they just want to loaf around and gather government checks," the president said."

"Are there people that abuse the system? Yes, both at the bottom and at the top," he added, including millionaires who he said pay no income taxes. He said many at the low end of the income scale pay other forms of taxes, and some who don't pay taxes are senior citizens, students, disabled, veterans or soldiers who are stationed overseas.

"Americans work hard, and if they are not working right now I promise you they want to go to work," he said.

As for education, the president said Romney and running mate Ryan advocate a budget that would cut federal funds for schools by about 20 percent.

"And you could see potentially even more teachers being laid off, working conditions for teachers becoming even worse and potentially for more strikes," he said.

The president added that under his administration, "what we say to school districts all across the country is we will provide you with more help as long as you're being accountable, and as far as teachers go, I think they work as hard as anybody, but we also want to make sure that they are having high standards of performance in math and science."

Money was not a significant issue in the Chicago strike. Mayor Rahm Emanuel secured an extension of the school day and empowered principals to hire the teachers they want. Teachers were able to soften a new evaluation process and win some job protections.

The day's campaign events showed the complexities of campaigning in Florida, a state that is home to large populations of seniors and of Hispanics.

Romney released a new television commercial designed to appeal to both groups.

It features Sen. Marco Rubio plugging the Republicans' plan to overhaul Medicare, a flashpoint in the campaign that Obama says could threaten future beneficiaries with high out-of-pocket costs.

Saying his mother is 81, Rubio declares in the ad: "We can save Medicare without changing hers, but only if younger Americans accept that our Medicare will be different than our parents', when we retire in thirty years.

"But after all they did for us, isn't that the least we can do?"

While Obama is likely to win the Hispanic vote overwhelmingly, he drew criticism in his appearances.

He said the lack of immigration reform legislation was his biggest failure as president and "not for a lack of trying or desire." He said he couldn't find a single Republican to help work on the legislation. "I'm happy to take responsibility for being naive here," the president said when pressed to admit he broke his promise.

Univision anchor Jorge Ramos interjected, "You promised us, and a promise is a promise. And with all due respect, you didn't keep that promise."

Obama drew praise from Hispanic groups earlier in the year when he announced a policy shift that will allow some immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children to avoid deportation.

Romney has been critical of the change, but has declined to say if he would reverse it if he wins the White House.

Central Bank bars Nigeria airlines from bank loans

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Nigeria's Central Bank has barred the nation's top two airlines from receiving any additional loans over their massive outstanding debts, an official said Friday, as passengers were stranded by the nation's aviation industry crisis in which its largest carrier grounded all its domestic flights.

Arik Air Ltd., the nation's top carrier which indefinitely halted its domestic flights Thursday claiming that the nation's aviation minister wanted to destroy the company for her personal profit, owes the state-run Asset Management Corp. of Nigeria more than $534 million, according to information released by the Central Bank.

Aero Contractors Co. of Nigeria Ltd., the airline of choice for many of the foreign oil companies working in Nigeria, owes more than $203 million to the state-run company, according to the Central Bank.

Ugo A. Okoroafor, a Central Bank spokesman, told The Associated Press on Friday any bank that gave companies or individuals on the list loans would face serious fines from the government. While acknowledging the struggles of the airline industry, the spokesman said the bank could not allow massive debts to pile up on the nation's banks and threaten the financial market.

"Adverse consequences exist for people who take part in such unhealthy acts," Okoroafor said.

Simon Tumba, a spokesman for Aero Contractors, declined to immediately comment Friday. Arik Air spokesman Adebanji Ola said the airline "was not in receipt of that particular" order by the Central Bank and declined to comment further.

The list of debtors barred from bank loans, first published in the Friday edition of ThisDay newspaper, also includes other top members of Nigeria's business elite, who regularly have access to and patronage of top politicians in the oil-rich nation.

Jimoh Ibrahim, who ran carrier Air Nigeria until the company recently collapsed owing staff four months' pay, owes the state-run company $175 million for loans to his company Nicon Investments Ltd. Zenon Petroleum & Gas Ltd., run by Femi Otedola, a supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan, owes an eye-popping $1.2 billion to the state-run asset company.

The Central Bank's decision likely will sow further chaos in Nigeria's aviation industry, which has been plagued by problems since a jetliner crash in June killed more than 160 people in Lagos. Only three of Nigeria's nine domestic airlines are now flying, as others remained grounded over maintenance, financing or other problems.

Thursday, Arik Air announced it would stop all its domestic flights following what it described as a raid by Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria employees on its operations at Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Arik Air officials also accused Aviation Minister Stella Oduah of having a financial interest in seeing the airline fail, but declined to elaborate on the claim. An aviation ministry spokesman denied the allegations and said Arik Air was trying to distract the public from how much money it owed the federal government. Arik Air officials acknowledge that debt and say they make monthly payments to try and resolve it.

Arik Air, a private firm born out of the pieces of country's former national airline, had grown into a major international air carrier in West Africa over the last few years, with direct flights to Johannesburg, London and New York. The airline has more than 20 aircraft in its fleet and ordered more than a dozen new planes. It also provided more flights domestically than any other carrier in Nigeria, a nation of more than 160 million people.

Despite a series of fatal crashes over the last decades, air travel remains the quickest and safest way to travel across Nigeria, a nation about twice the size of California. The nation's road network, a series of decrepit highways that have some of the worst fatality records in the world, remain littered with axle-busting potholes, filled with speeding drivers and preyed upon by gangs of armed bandits. Nigeria's moribund railroad system, though undergoing repairs, remains woefully unable to provide a legitimate alternative for travelers.

Arik Air has said it will rebook passengers on flights when it begins flying again, though the company has not given a date when it will resume its domestic operations.

For passengers like Amina Maikori, who found herself stranded Thursday at the Lagos airport while trying to fly to Abuja, Nigeria's capital, it meant rebooking her ticket on Aero Contractors and waiting for a later flight.

However, even that flight ended up leaving the airport three and a half hours late without explanation, she said, something she just had to accept with a shrug.

"I think it's more frequent here than anywhere else," Maikori said.

Happy 10th Birthday Roomba! (video)

ROomba

It's been a full decade since the first Roomba scuttled off the assembly line and onto the floors of slatternly geeks. Understandably, iRobot's looking back over the period, revealing that since then, it's sold over six million of the units -- with each one covering an average of 705 miles in its lifetime. Along the way, that army of Wall-Es-in-the-making have consumed around two million pounds of dirt, including the odd Lego brick, pet snake and wedding bands -- although, as the videos below demonstrate, it's normally quite friendly to children and animals.
