Culver Academies heading to Washington for Presidential Inaugural Parade

The Black Horse Troop and the Equestriennes officially had their last practice this morning before the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Parade.

This is an important year for Culver Academies because it's the 100th anniversary of the school?s first inaugural appearance in 1913.

While this is the Black Horse Troops 16th appearance overall, it is only the Equestriennes 7th.

Even though the Equestriennes got a late start, their involvement has become part of the tradition.
?Well when the girls were first able to go in 1985 it was huge, it was you know, such an event for girls to be able to participate and be really part of the school and part of the program. So from then on we've always been able to go and sometimes we have to remind the girls of the history? says Equestriennes coach Lynn Rasch.

Rasch has been the Equestriennes coach for 26 years and no one knows better than her that no matter how hard you plan, something can always go wrong when preparing for the inaugural parade.

?In 1985 we had to practice in 30 below wind chill and after 45 minutes the students had hypothermia, some kids had to go to the hospital, some had frost bite, and unfortunately they had to cancel the parade the very next day because of those weather conditions because they didn't think anybody could be out there very long? says Rasch.

And with high hopes the weather will cooperate, she believes nothing will go wrong this time.

?I think we have prepared for most contingencies. I keep looking at the weather every single day and right now it?s like 37, 39, so that?s bearable? says Rasch.

Some of the girls will be prepared for the cold with long underwear, under armor and of course hand warmers, but even without all of the protection nothing is going to stop these girls from participating in the parade for their very first time.

?Walking down Pennsylvania Avenue and seeing the president will make it worth all of the hours? says Equestriennes Captain Eleanor Logue.

?I was defiantly really excited. I was like Lilian Lilian we get to go! And I gave her a big hug and we were just really excited knowing that we both would have the same experience? says other Equestriennes Captain Natalie Hogan.

And even after seven parades Rasch says each time is completely different and the excitement is always there.

?So on the day of the parade and the excitement, I mean we have to be there hours ahead of time but this excitement just builds and when they see the president of the United States as they ride by, they are just amazed at that opportunity that so few people get to take part in this and that is just a fantastic experience.?

The parade is on Monday, so the group will be leaving this Friday around 4:30 in the morning.

Both the Black Horse Troop and the Equestriennes will be sure to stand out in the parade because out of 147 horses total in the parade, they make up 82 of them.

Microsoft Is Finally Bringing XBLA Games to Windows 8 and RT (Updated)

Microsoft Is Finally Bringing XBLA Games to Windows 8 and RT (Updated) This has been a long time coming. Microsoft Play just added has (see update below) 15 Xbox Live Arcade games to Windows 8 and RT through the Windows Store. And it's about time.

When the Windows Store launched, its ability to unify games across computers made it seem like a natural fit for XBLA titles. But the fragmentation between Microsoft's various stores quickly because apparent through missteps like the Mature rating flub. This is an encouraging step toward getting all of Microsoft's stores (Windows, Xbox, Windows Phone) on the same page.

It's also possibly a heads up about the platform that the Xbox 720/Durango will be built on. It would make perfect sense to start this migration now, and then build the next Xbox as either a Windows 8 box, or at least on the Windows 8 kernel.

Here's the full list of games added in this first wave of Microsoft Play:

Skulls of the Shogun.
The Gunstringer: Dead Man Running.
ilomilo+.
Wordament.
Toy Soldiers: Cold War.
Taptiles.
Rocket Riot 3D.
Reckless Racing Ultimate.
Pinball FX2.
Microsoft Minesweeper.
Microsoft Solitaire Collection.
Microsoft Mahjong.
Hydro Thunder Hurricane.
Adera.
4 Elements II Special Edition.

[Microsoft via TNW]

Update: This is not the "launch" we originally framed it as. The games listed have largely been available for a while?there are a few new ones?and this is merely the launch of Microsoft talking about how XBLA titles have been migrated. It seems like more of a statement of intent for more titles going forward, which is still notable, but not as important as we made it out to be. We apologize for any confusion.

Dysfunctional DC raises Americans' hackles

By Allison Linn, TODAY

Americans are growing increasingly worried about federal debt and government dysfunction, which economists say could be a sign they are afraid that squabbles about the fiscal cliff and the debt ceiling could derail the nation?s fragile economic recovery.

"I would guess that the real concern is that if Congress screws things up with the fiscal cliff ? and then coming up with the debt ceiling, that it will hurt the economy," said Justin Wolfers, a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan.

The economy in general still tops the list of the biggest problems facing America today, with 21 percent listing it as the biggest issue, according to a Gallup poll released this week.

But the poll conducted in early January found that nearly as many people ? 20 percent ??listed the federal deficit as the top problem facing the country. The percentage of people listing the deficit as the biggest U.S. problem has grown sharply in recent months, while the percentage of people naming the economy in general has fallen.

Over that time, Americans also have grown much more dissatisfied with politicians and the government. About 18 percent listed politicians and the government as the top problem facing the U.S. in the January poll, up from 9 percent in October.

Meanwhile, 16 percent said unemployment was the top problem, down from 26 percent in October. That marks the first time since 2009 that unemployment has not been in the No. 1 or No. 2 spot.

Economists say they don?t necessarily think Americans are less concerned about the economy or the tight job market. Rather, they say, Americans may be growing more concerned that political infighting and the growing federal deficit could hurt the nation?s already fragile economic recovery.

?We?re maybe actually?just as concerned about unemployment as we were six months ago, but we?re much more concerned about the deficit,? said Erik Snowberg, a political economist at the California Institute of Technology.

Snowberg and others say Americans likely want?the government?to fix the nation?s economic woes, or at least not exacerbate them.

?It?s one thing if (politicians) can solve the people?s problems. It?s another thing if they are doing the opposite ? if they?re just arguing and not solving problems and making things worse,? said Chris Christopher, senior principal economist with IHS Global Insight.

Christopher noted that consumer confidence fell sharply in November and December, as the fight over the fiscal cliff started to heat up. Wolfers, at the University of Michigan, documented a similar effect when the debt ceiling fight came up for the first time in the summer of 2011.

Economists say it?s not clear how much of an effect consumer confidence has on things like spending and hiring. But it is clear that consumer confidence is impacted by political strife, and there?s been plenty of that in recent months.

"We're going from the fiscal cliff into higher (taxes) to this bickering over the federal debt ceiling,? Christopher said.

The political strife comes as the nation?s economy appears to be steadily, if slowly, improving. The job market is adding some new jobs each month, and?the housing market appears to at least be stabilizing.

Still, economic growth is not yet strong enough that something couldn?t throw it off course, Snowberg and others say. President Barack Obama warned Monday?that an extended fight over the debt ceiling could weaken the economy or even push the nation back into recession.

The United States is set to hit the limit on how much it can borrow some time in the next month or so, and Congress must approve an increase in that limit so the government can pay its bills. But Republicans would like to use the debt ceiling limit vote as an opportunity to push cuts in government spending, which they say are necessary for the nation?s long-term fiscal health.

Democrats argue that it doesn?t make sense to use the debt limit as the basis for that discussion, since the limit itself does not authorize the government to spend more money.

Wolfers, who does work for Gallup but was not involved in this survey, said the idea that the U.S. could stop paying its bills because of political fighting is astounding to many people who are watching the situation unfold in other countries and in the financial sector.

?It?s a fragile recovery and we certainly don?t need politicians in Washington derailing it,? Wolfers said.

What do you think is the biggest current threat to the U.S. economy?

Washington Post: Redskins Season Review: Offense

The Redskins' offense carried the team through much of the season before the defense regrouped and contributed to the team's playoff push. Rookies led the way, with quarterback Robert Griffin III and tailback Alfred Morris doing much of the heavy lifting. But Griffin's knee injury now hovers over the team, and it's unclear whether he or another of this year's rookies, Kirk Cousins, will be the Redskins' starter at the outset of next season.

Nutrition | Video: Nutrition 101 - Supplement advice

School is in, and we're signed up for Nutrition 101 with our personal trainer Dan Smullen, who tells us all about the supplements we should be taking.

Anyone who works out knows that the effort you put in at the weights bench needs to be matched by what you're doing in the kitchen. But what about when you've just finished a tough workout and you need to fuel yourself, stat?

Probably the most important supplement will be the whey protein shakes. If you're going to go from zero physical activity to working hard, it's going to hurt your muscles big time, and the protein shake after you hit the gym is going to help you recover much quicker. It also encourages you to build muscle, which aids weight loss.

Taking this post-workout shake is going to be easier than grilling up a chicken breast, and it also means that you can get it within that 30-minute window after you finish which is when your muscles will respond quickest to whatever food supply you take in.

It's also key to look after your body's vitamins and minerals, which is why Opti-Men is going to keep you healthy as you push your body for more. As you start to lose weight, you can also lose key vitamins, but this supplement can get them back in your system with a blend of nutrients specifically designed to give men the things they need to recover.

Glutamine will keep inflammation down and support your immune system. If you want to succeed, you have to constantly push yourself, and with these capsules you can ensure that your body is ready for the challenge when you walk through the door of the gym. It increases strength as well as endurance, so the next time you need to make a last ditch tackle to stop your team from conceding, you'll have that extra burst of energy.

Finally, if you've found that the last set is the most difficult, or you can't get through those final reps, then add Amino Energy to your cupboard and kiss goodbye to your previous personal bests, because they're about to get smashed. With some caffeine to give you a boost of at least 30 per cent and amino acids to burn fat, you'll notice your energy, endurance and focus will be at new levels, pushing you to your absolute max.

Watch the video to see Dan talk us through these must haves if you want to join Brian on his journey to getting ripped.

Facebook's graph search and Microsoft's Bing: It's complicated

Fact: Microsoft is an investor in Facebook.
Fact: Bing powers Web search functionality on Facebook (and has since 2010).
Fact: Microsoft makes use of Facebook data to power its own Bing social search.

bingfbsocial

So given these facts, one might assume that Facebook also is using Bing to power its just-announced Graph search. (Graph search is different from Web search; it allows users to obtain more refined results based on information users are sharing inside of Facebook. More details on how this works.)

But is this actually the case? Is Microsoft's Bing what makes Facebook's Graph Search tick? And if not, has the Microsoft-Facebook duo gone from friends with benefits to frenemies with investments?

I asked Microsoft on January 15 whether Bing was powering Facebook Web search and received an inconclusive answer from a spokesperson. The answer, via an e-mailed statement:

"Web search and Graph search are different. The way web search works is when you do a search on Facebook, the results page features a two-column layout with Bing-powered web results appearing on the left-hand side overlaid with social information from Facebook including how many people like a given result. On the right hand side, you will see content from Facebook Pages and apps that are related to your search. In addition, Facebook?s Graph Search enables people to search across all their content and connections on Facebook to discover new people, places and things."

A new post on the Bing Community blog site also doesn't directly answer the question. From that post, authored by Derrick Connell, Corporate Vice President of Search:

"As part of this product (Facebook graph search), our two engineering teams worked together to advance a unified search experience. That means that when people want to search beyond Facebook, they see web search results from Bing with social context and additional information such as Facebook pages."

Yes, Bing is generating the Web search results. But is Bing powering Facebook's graph search? I was still not 100 percent sure after reading (and re-reading) the January 15 Bing blog post.?

I tried one more time. Three was the magic number. Microsoft is not powering Facebook's graph search. From the aforementioned spokesperson:

"Confirmed that Bing only powers the web search functionality on Facebook. We do not power Facebook?s graph search."

Microsoft, for its part, is continuing its own experiments on making Bing search more social. But in order for social results to show up in Bing, one's friends need to opt into sharing information that way. As I've noted before, I don't like seeing my friends' preferences and recommendations show up when I search for something on Bing. (No offense, "friends.") So I have disabled this kind of connection between Bing and Facebook.?

I like my search separate from my social. Let's see if Facebook users understand graph search enough to decide the same -- or differently.
