China warn Olympic gold rush could slow

China fired a warning they could win a third fewer golds than at Beijing 2008 as the ex-hosts played down expectations they will top the medals table for the second Olympics running.

Deputy chef de mission Xiao Tian said statistics showed previous Games hosts shed an average of 32 percent of their gold medals at the next Olympics -- meaning China would probably fall back behind the United States.

"In Beijing we were the host country so we had 51 gold medals and 100 medals in total. Here, we're not the host country," he told journalists at London's Olympic Park.

"We made a calculation: in five past Olympics, the previous host country had a reduction of 32 percent in gold medals and medals overall.

"Therefore I don't think we'll have the same amount of medals as in Beijing. But the Chinese delegation will do its best to get its best results."

China outstripped the United States, table-toppers for the previous three Olympics, by 15 gold medals in 2008 as they became the Games' most successful nation for the first time.

By their calculations, they could now win 35 at London, one fewer than the United States amassed in 2008. However, China routinely play down their prospects before big events and such a drop would be a major surprise.

China's 396-strong team arrives in London still dominant in its key sports of diving, table tennis, badminton, shooting, weightlifting and gymnastics, but also with a stronger swim team than 2008.

Observers say China, which has extended its cooperation with foreign coaches and experts, also has strong medal chances in taekwondo, judo, women's water polo, women's volleyball, women's beach volleyball and trampoline.

According to Xiao, China's biggest weakness is in ball sports -- despite selecting NBA basketball player Yi Jianlian as their flag-bearer. They are contesting all sports apart from football, handball and the equestrian events.

"For the time being it will be very difficult to have a medal in basketball or in any ball games. That's our weakness," he admitted.

Xiao added that the Games were also an important public relations exercise for China, and he urged his athletes to show "Olympic spirit" to promote a positive national image.

"We enter the Olympics as a country. It's not as an individual or a team or a squad. It's really as a country for China," said Xiao.

"After 30 years of reforms and opening-up, China is developing, it's progressing, in every field and we would like to have... friendly exchanges so the Olympic spirit can continue to be promoted," he added.

China tax collection down

Beijing, July 25

Government tax collections in China have decreased in the first half of 2012, the finance ministry said.

Collection of taxes related to personal income and real estate has decreased in the first six months as compared to the same period a year ago, the China Daily reported.

The amount of personal income taxes collected fell by 8 percent year-on-year in the first six months, hitting 372.2 billion yuan ($59 billion).

Meanwhile, the country continues to rein in its housing market and apply curbs to property prices, the newspaper said Wednesday.

As a result, less revenue was collected from taxes imposed on the property industry, which used to contribute the majority of local governments' revenues.

Baby's (Mine) 1st Birthday Pictures | Babys First Year Blog

Top2 24 of The Most Adorable 1st Birthday Party Pics (Really)So you know that beach party I was raving about? All of those amazing ideas I had curated and was dead set on executing?

Yea.

Didn?t happen.

What did happen was a?most lovely, sweet affair, in our backyard with?most of our nearest and dearest. I?l be the first of any to proclaim the?many virtues of all that is DIY.?Especially?when it comes to anything baby, toddler, house and home related. And obviously food/drink recipes. (Hello Pinterest,?my sexy BFF).

As we?momma?s know, life in the land of baby and toddler takes on a carnivalesque hue at times. Wherein we just don?t have the time to put?Martha Stewart to shame. Which is fine, because our babies?

They. Don?t. Care.

You could stick a candle in a?McCain cake, let them roll around naked and have those who love and dote upon them the?most show up. That right there is all they need and/or know about a party in their honour being awesome. Oh, and the presents. But that bit doesn?t come until later.

I guess what I?m trying to say, is all of these grand birthday parties are really for us. The adults. And the expectation of presents, well ? that all up to us to. These little humans after all, are essentially?moulded by us. So, what?may be cute when they are younger? (Ripping open a mountain of pressies). Will be far less so when they start to demand or expect it, often skulking when they don?t get it. We?ve all heard the term, ??I?ve created a?monster?.

?Nuff said.

It should also be?mentioned that technically, Abby doesn?t turn 1 until this Thursday ? we had her grand hoopla of a party earlier to accommodate guest RSVP?s. So you?can expect to be hit with another round of epic cuteness come the actual day of her birth. Until then though,?may your ovaries (or other baby-loving parts) be tickled by these?

Pressing On With Your Business Using Article Marketing Methods

How could it possibly be true that posting a few simple articles can bring attention to your online business? Is it possible for you to find a method and stick to it? A number of people have outstanding success using articles to increase traffic to their online business, and it is possible for you to do it too if you follow this advice.

Mix your article with different technical information. When working to promote something that involves technical intricacies, be sure you do not neglect to discuss them. That said, putting the information in layman?s terms could help introduce people to the product, as well. You?ll be respected if you make sure that your content is accessible to everyone in your market.

Use anchored text in your links to help better promote your articles. If you want to build some authority and a solid set of backlinks, you should aim to link back to two or more different pages using your blog.

Your article marketing approach should avoid focusing on convincing readers of your expertise. Try giving readers quality, useful content. Letting your good work speak for itself is the ideal way to establish your credibility and competence.

If you?re not sure what to write about, think about what your readers are looking for. Comments left on your previous posts, and e-mail responses from readers are great sources for new content.

Choose your article topics carefully. As you become an expert in your field, you may forget to stress the basics.

Make sure that your article is submitted to all available article directories. These typically rank very well with the different search engines. You will receive publicity free of charge when your articles are selected.

One way to make the articles you write more accessible to your readers is to write as if you were speaking to a friend. This will keep the tone friendly and light and won?t sound too formal. So, put your readers at ease by lightening the tone.

Articles that are written well and provide good information instill confidence and trust in potential customers, and make them more likely to purchase something. This helps to build a good business relationship, and develop a loyal following.

The articles you post should always lead up to your readers buying your product or reading more of your articles. While many readers prefer the idea of a tidy, five-step solution, most realize that a single article is unlikely to contain everything they need to know. You should identify the step you are trying to lead them to before you begin your article. If you can plant that in your article, you will have readers handing out their money for the results.

In all honestly, you will never find any secrets hidden in the field of article marketing and, anyone who tells you that they know something no one else does is probably lying to you. When you find stuff out about business, you also learn what you should be learning about article marketing. Just note that it?s simple, marketing that is handled through any content distribution is article marketing.

It?s important to not use the word conclusion in your actual conclusion. These words indicate to readers that there is no additional information left in your article, so they may as well stop reading. Your concluding paragraphs should summarize the article, simply leaving out that wording. What you want to do is have your reader continue to read the full article so that they will notice your resource box.

Since article marketing can be tough to break in to, you might want to work on a second company before you jump in too deep. By doing this, you?ll have additional experience to help you better be prepared when you actually begin marketing your business.

Online programs are updated on a very regular basis, so make a habit of seeing what the latest tool available is that can help you to compose new marketing literature. More and more products are introduced every day to save you time, energy and money when writing articles. Use all the tools at your disposal. Remember that article marketing is competitive!

By following these article marketing tips, you will experience more online success, and develop a dependable readership. Use the knowledge learned here to craft your own article marketing strategy which will bring you the results you?ve dreamed of

GOP says health care repeal also stops a tax

House Ways and Means Committees Chairman Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., leads a hearing on the implications of the Supreme Court's ruling that the individual mandate in the "Affordable Care Act" is constitutional, particularly as it relates to Congress' authority to lay and collect new taxes, Tuesday, July 10, 2012, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, July 10, 2012. at right is the committee's ranking Democrat, Rep. Sander Levin, D-Mich. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? House Republicans, stung by the Supreme Court decision upholding President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, are seizing on one wrinkle to bolster their election-year case for repeal ? the court's judgment that the penalty for failing to get insurance is a tax.

The House has voted more than 30 times to scrap, defund or undercut the law since Obama signed it in March 2010, political moves that went nowhere in the Democratic-controlled Senate. Republican opponents cast the law as government overreach, socialized medicine and an unaffordable approach to the nation's system of health care.

Two weeks after the conservative-led court's ruling, the House GOP leadership pushed for another symbolic repeal vote on Wednesday with a fresh argument. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in his majority opinion that the law was constitutional because it imposes a tax ? not a penalty ? on people who refuse to buy insurance. Republicans who repeatedly pressed for repeal said a "yes" vote would not only overturn the law but spare some 20 million Americans from an unnecessary tax.

The law's onerous burdens and taxes, Republicans complained, were stifling small businesses now reluctant to hire because of the additional expenses. This represented a clear obstacle to the country's economic recovery.

They also pointed out that Obama had promised not to raise taxes on the middle class, and the fee for failing to get insurance would do just that.

"As the Supreme Court ruled, the cornerstone of the Democrats' health care law, the individual mandate, is a massive tax," said House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., during the daylong debate Tuesday. "This is a major tax with major implications. Democrats have argued that the individual mandate was necessary to improve the nation's health. So what's next? Will they require you to purchase low-fat or low-salt foods or pay a tax because they think it's good for you?"

Democrats countered that the penalty for not buying insurance was directed at people who could afford it.

"Otherwise you're passing the cost on to us," said Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash. "You're a freeloader. The Republicans are glorifying freeloaders."

Under the law, Americans who don't get qualified health insurance will be required to pay the penalty ? or tax ? starting for the 2014 tax year, unless they are exempt because of low income, religious beliefs or because they are members of American Indian tribes. The penalty will be fully phased in by 2016, when it will be $695 for each uninsured adult or 2.5 percent of family income, whichever is greater, up to $12,500.

Democrats circulated a memorandum with a series of quotes from likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in which he defends the so-called individual mandate of the Massachusetts' health care law that he secured as governor. Obama's law was closely modeled on the universal-coverage plan that Romney instituted in his state. That plan penalized people who failed to comply with the requirement to buy insurance, just like the Obama overhaul will do.

Romney, the Democrats pointed out, said in June 2005 that "everyone must either become insured or maintain adequate savings to cover their medical expenses. We cannot expect some citizens to pay for others who can afford to pay some or all of their own way."

Democrats also argued that the two days of debate and vote were a waste of time because the Democratic-led Senate wouldn't vote for repeal, the Supreme Court had rendered its judgment and voters want Congress to focus on more pressing issues such as the sluggish economy.

"As a psychiatrist, I'm qualified to say this," McDermott said. "One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. The game is over. The referee, John Roberts, blew the whistle. It's over, guys."

Although the outcome isn't in doubt, the vote provides plenty of election-year fodder, energizing the political base and helping to attract campaign dollars. House Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said a number of Democrats would join Republicans in voting to repeal the law.

In fact, many of the Democrats who backed the overhaul lost their seats in the 2010 elections. Those who are left would be open to charges of flip-flopping if they switch their votes.

The health care law was Obama's signature domestic achievement, but it remains unpopular and divisive among the public according to opinion polls. Democrats argued that erasing the law would eliminate the more popular individual elements ? a guarantee on coverage for those with pre-existing medical conditions, a requirement allowing children up to age 26 to remain on their parents' coverage and the reduction of seniors' Medicare prescription drug costs by closing the "doughnut hole" coverage gap.

Republicans insisted they were keeping a promise with Americans to repeal the law.

"This law epitomizes Washington at its very worst: intrusive mandates, higher costs, red tape, unaffordable spending, taxes on employers and families and control of personal health care decisions by boards, bureaus and agencies in Washington," said Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Aside from the criticism and the calls for "repeal and replace," the GOP did not offer any specific alternative to Obama's law.

Skip a stone on a mountain lake from your desk

1 hr.

Stuck in a cubicle but wish you were in the mountains skipping stones? So do I. And now we can, sort of, thanks to a promotional robot sitting on the side of a lake in Sun Valley, Idaho, waiting for you to play with it.

To do so, surf over to www.stoneskippingrobot.com?and?tell Skippy how hard and what angle to fling the stone.?Skippy will do the rest. Just sit back and watch your stone skip across an idyllic mountain?lake.

Skippy was built by Eleven Inc., a San Francisco-based marketing firm hired?to help the resort town attract visitors.

"This place truly sells itself if you're here," Daniel Murphy, director of interactive production for Eleven, told me today via satellite phone from Sun Valley?where he is managing the Skip Town campaign.

"It is everything you imagined about the great American wilderness ... we just needed to bring it to the people."

That's how the idea for?Skippy was born.

The robot is "a heavily modified clay pigeon thrower," said?M David Low, a creative technologist for Eleven, who is also in Sun Valley.

Instead of clay pigeons, it throws stones, for one. Skippy is controlled by the Arduino platform. Users set the angle and power for their stone toss. Given the remoteness of Skippy's location (a private lake outside of Sun Valley), there's a slight lag in communications, Low noted.

The skips are all recorded in real time. As soon as your stone is skipped, you get kicked to a results page where you can relive and share the the video of your skip.

So far, "thousands" of people have skipped stones, Murphy said, and tens of thousands have visited the campaign website. Some of those visitors may not be skipping their own stones given the long line.

For those city folk too impatient to wait in line, you can watch Skippy skip the?stones of others or view the video below to learn more about the campaign.

The folks in Sun Valley, of course, want this experience to whet your appetite for a real mountain vacation. You can register to win a trip as you wait for your turn to skip. Having spent nearly a decade of my life there, I can say it's certainly worth a visit.

The Three-Legged Stool of Project Management | Fisher Business ...

Taking On Special Projects Requires Project Management

From time to time, your company will need to take on projects to increase business or inject a much-needed change into your workplace.? Projects are one-time efforts by definition, and they will require you to grow and add to your skill set to accomplish the project goals.? But in order to keep a project from getting too time-consuming, too expensive, or too substandard, you need put some constraints on your projects.? The project itself is the seat of the ?Three-Legged Stool? and Cost, Quality, and Schedule are the legs.? To have an efficient and effective project, you need to have all legs of the stool be equal so there?s no wobbling!

Budget for Everything

Managing a small or medium-sized business means knowing all about budget constraints, right?? But there?s a fine line between putting your project on a tight-but-fair budget and totally starving it out and still expecting quality.? Look realistically at the goals you?re setting out to accomplish, and do the research on what each piece of the project will really cost to complete.? For instance, if you want to set up new software systems, look not only at the costs of different software packages, but also different installation, implementation, and training options, and don?t forget to budget the time you and your employees will spend on the project, too.

Create a Schedule You Can Stick To- Mostly

You know what you need to do, and it looks like something you can do with the money you have available.? Now ask yourself:? How much time do you really need and how much can you afford based on your set budget?? Create a timeline for the project by finding a realistic end-date that you can afford to go over just a little.? This will keep your project on-budget and on-quality while still allowing for a minor snag or two.

Manage your quality expectations

Given your time schedule and budgetary constraints, what project quality can you realistically expect?? This is the third ?leg? of the table, and the one that most people make too long for the size of the Time and Budget legs.? But the truth is, for most small businesses, time and budget are in shorter supply, so quality must be taken down to match up with them.? Just be sure to not go low-quality, because at that point your project might not even be worth the trouble.

US economy struggles to create jobs again

The monthly jobs report for June shows US employers added 80,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate remains unchanged at 8.2%. A CNBC panel discusses the data.

By msnbc.com staff and news wires

The U.S. economy generated a paltry 80,000 jobs in June, showing that the nation's job-creation machine is stumbling even as voters' attitudes about the economy begin to gel ahead of?the November election.

The unemployment rate is?unchanged at 8.2 percent, the Labor Department reported Friday.

Job-creation has stumbled since March?amid worries about consumer spending, the?debt crisis in Europe and stagnation in?Congress.

"There's just not a lot of momentum in the economy," said Sam Bullard, an economist at Wells Fargo? in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Mitt Romney, the Republican challenger to President Barack Obama, is focusing his campaign on the weak jobs market that has dogged the presidency.

"The president's policies have not gotten America working again and the president is going to have to stand up and take responsibility for it," Romney said at a news conference in New Hampshire after the jobs report was released.

Later, at a campaign stop in Poland, Ohio, Obama told the crowd in the crucial swing state that while?private sector?job creation was headed in the right direction, more needed to be done to help the economy grow faster and create more jobs.

"I want to get back to a time when middle class families and those working to get to the middle class have some basic security. That's our goal," he said.

Related story: Just four more jobs reports until the election

The details of the report were?unsettling. The government said the economy created 1,000 fewer jobs during April and May than previously estimated.

The somber report might push the Federal Reserve closer to taking new actions to lower borrowing costs to encourage companies to increase hiring. Analysts polled by Reuters expected an increase in payrolls of 90,000 jobs.

Debt woes have bogged down much of Europe, sending some countries into recession. The eurozone crisis in turn has dulled economic growth around the world from China to Brazil. A survey on Monday found U.S. manufacturing contracted for the first time in nearly three years in June.

Europe is not the only worry weighing on the U.S. outlook. Washington plans enough belt-tightening at the start of 2013 to easily send the economy into recession. Cautious observers wonder if lawmakers can avoid this "fiscal cliff."

"Firms are saying, 'Is there really a reason to ramp up hiring right now?'," said Bullard.

Job creation averaged 75,000 per month during the second quarter, compared with an average increase of 226,000 in the first quarter. Part of the slowdown could be because mild weather led companies to boost hiring in the winter at spring's expense.

But recent weakness in everything from retail sales to business sentiment suggests something more fundamental is at play.

"We're not expecting things to take off in the second half of the year," said Sara Klein, an economist at Moody's Analytics in West Chester, Pennsylvania. "Weather wasn't the only factor."?

Until recently, the United States had been a relative bright spot in the global economy, especially in manufacturing. Most economists still expect lackluster growth over the rest of 2012 rather than a slip toward recession.

But economic weakness abroad has lately become a formidable hurdle, as Obama has acknowledged, and global policymakers are acting like a storm is brewing.

China, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England all eased monetary policy on Thursday, raising speculation they had coordinated their action.

The Fed eased policy further last month, but the recent run of weak data has fueled speculation the U.S. central bank could deliver more stimulus when its next meeting concludes on Aug. 1.

Even though June's pace of hiring was decidedly weak, the Fed might not want to unveil bold new measures now because the real storm could be months down the road.

"Hiring isn't as strong as earlier this year ... but not to the point where you see obvious need for Fed action," said Cooper Howes, an economist at Barclays in New York.

Reuters contributed to this report.
