Digital Flux Live Wallpaper [Live Wallpaper Review]

Digital Flux Live Wallpaper

Continuing our live wallpaper reviewing extravaganza is another from masterful wallpaper developer, D'Keesto. This entry in the "digital" series is called Digital Flux Live Wallpaper, and while it's definitely cool, I have no idea where the "flux" comes into play. (That's okay, though.)

Instead of embers or honeycombs or anything of that sort, you've got rectangular prisms that move up and down, seemingly at random. Touch the screen and they'll either be pushed down or pulled up (depending on what you pick in the settings). It's all very mechanical, and reminds me of that crazy complicated choreographic dance that happened at the Olympics in Beijing. (You know, the one with the people underneath the boxes!)

The settings menu is a bit simpler than some of D'Keesto's other offerings, limiting you to a mere two colors (and utter dominance by your color in slot one), but you can still pick from all sorts of different single colors or have the colors go off of the battery level.

There's also some performance options, like adjusting the camera zoom, turning anti-aliasing on or off, or enabling accurate shadows. Depending on your device, you might change these settings around, but with close camera zoom, anti-aliasing off, and accurate shadows on, I didn't see any performance issues as I slid and swiped from screen-to-screen. Of course, your mileage may vary.

If bouncing boxes are you thing, Digital Flux Live Wallpaper is the wallpaper for you. It's inexpensive, runs well, and has just enough customization to keep things interesting. I'm not quite sure where the digital aspect comes into play (especially compared to Digital Hive and Digital Embers), but maybe it's just a name continuity thing. Regardless, as far as live wallpapers go, this one certainly doesn't disappoint.

Digital Flux Live Wallpaper is a mere 99 cents in the Google Play Store. We've got download links, screenshots, and video after the break.

Group Takes Aim at Controversial 'Disorder'

Woody Sims was a gifted boy. His mother said he began reading at a very early age, and he was a bright student in preschool.

To those around him, his development in his early years seemed normal. But in his college essay, Woody, now 18 years old, described a childhood experience marked by "deep fears of loud noises, cooked carrots and handwriting.

"I was over-stimulated, which meant I couldn't handle certain textures, and freaked out at loud noises," Woody wrote in his essay. "I also had problems managing tasks with multi-sensory inputs, like handwriting and catching a ball. These sensory problems meant that sports, driving, and concerts would all be things I couldn't ever do or see without a great deal of difficulty."

For Woody, the diagnosis of sensory processing disorder, or SPD for short, came very early, at age 4. His mother, Pam Sims, had arranged for him to be tested for his school's gifted program. It was the tester who informed her that he believed her son fit the bill for the disorder.

"We thought his physical development stuff was more related to his height," said Pam Sims, now 52, of Denver, Colo. "We didn't know anything about sensory processing disorder."

In a coincidence that Pam Sims calls a "luck of the draw," a center devoted to the research and treatment of this disorder happened to be located in Denver, where they live. It was here, at the STAR Center, that Woody engaged in sensory-based therapies aimed at improving his coordination and social and interactive therapies to help him deal with stimuli in his environment that he found harsh and jarring.

"It is amazing what it did for him," Pam Sims said. "As time went on, we had more treatments. We stopped when he was about 7 or 8 years old, as he had learned to regulate himself."

Stories like Woody's appear to support the existence of SPD -- and there are many such stories. Nevertheless, solid research confirming the existence of SPD is in far shorter supply, many in the medical community say. And on Monday, it would seem that new recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics have dealt another blow to the legitimacy of SPD. Specifically, the AAP recommends, "At this time, pediatricians should not use sensory processing disorder as a diagnosis."

The recommendations also suggest to pediatricians that they inform families that the evidence for sensory-based therapies is limited and that outcomes from these therapies should be monitored closely.

"I think the academy statement reinforces the decision that there is not enough information at this time to conclude that this is a distinct disorder," said Dr. Michelle Zimmer, a professor in the UC Department of Pediatrics and a lead author of the recommendations. "Moving forward, there needs to be a lot more research in this field."

Dr. Larry Desch, director of developmental pediatrics at Advocate Health Care and also a lead author on the recommendations, said that he did not anticipate that the recommendation would be well-received among parents and doctors who believe sensory processing disorder should have its own place as an official condition.

"I think they'll be unhappy, some of them," he said. "But I'm hoping it will lead to more research studies being done."

Google Penguin Update: Released Version 1.1

No matter that it?s late Friday night on the start of a three-day holiday weekend in the U.S., Google has just pushed out the first update to its recent webspam-fighting Penguin algorithm. Let?s call it Penguin 1.1.

Google?s Matt Cutts announced the news a short time ago on Twitter, calling it a ?data refresh? that impacts less than one-tenth of a percent of English-language searches.

Although webmasters and SEOs have been speculating consistently in recent weeks that Google had already pushed out a Penguin update (or several), Cutts specifically says this is the first update since Penguin launched back on April 24th.

Google has described Penguin as an algorithm change that?s aimed at webspam and, more specifically, ?sites that we believe are violating Google?s quality guidelines.?

Penguin led to immediate outcries from across the SEO industry, with many questioning if it made search results better or worse. Because it?s an algorithmic change, Google said it wouldn?t consider reconsideration requests made via Webmaster Central, but it did setup a form for webmasters to use if they believe Penguin had hit their sites by mistake.

Even though tonight?s update affects a small percentage of English searches, that form is still online.

For more about the Penguin update, see the articles listed below.

Postscript From Danny Sullivan: In the comments below, you?ll see some people wondering if they haven?t recovered from this update, does that means they?ll never recover and should start over. I?d wait a bit longer before that.

After Penguin 1.0 came out, Google said that anyone hit by that had been penalized. But soon after, there were examples of sites that didn?t appear to be spamming Google but which yet had traffic drops.

A few of these might have been false positives, but it?s far more reasonable to assume that when Google wiped out wide swathes of links, some sites that used to benefit from those links lost credit. In other words, they weren?t penalized ? they just didn?t get as much credit as before.

I?m still trying to get Google to confirm this or not, if everyone hit by Penguin 1.0 was really penalized or if there were some who just don?t get as much credit as before, because others were penalized. Stay tuned.

How Sliding Glass Doors Can Create More Space and Illuminate ...

The use of glass has become popular these days in building doors. Just one look at them will tell you why: first, they are lighter, and second, you get to see the view outside without the need to open your door. As such, glass doors have now become a common sight in many American homes.

In the past, when glass was still not widely used, wood was the material of choice in building doors. Wood offers greater security, as intruders won't be able to barge in without making noise; they also have the effect of creating an organic feel over the structure. However, the problem with wood is that at some point it will begin to show signs of decay.

Because of that, sliding glass doors are becoming a popular alternative to wood doors. Contrary to most beliefs, sliding glass doors work not only for beach homes; through proper installation and design, they can complement almost any type of home. With proper maintenance, sliding glass doors can last longer than wooden doors.

Typically, sliding glass doors are larger than traditional ones. Thus, they are more useful when moving large objects in and out of your house. Because of greater space, moving that dining set to your patio or hauling that Christmas tree to your living room can be easier, and you no longer have to worry about banging them on the door frame.

Sliding glass doors also allow natural light to enter your home. That way, you don't have to use electric lights as often as before, allowing you to cut down on your energy bills. For residents of Louisville doors made of glass are the best option in rejuvenating their drab rooms, as they found that glass doors create the illusion of greater space.

Probably the best thing about sliding glass doors is that they help keep out the elements while still allowing you to see the view outside. If you are a busy parent, glass doors can be useful for you, as you can keep on eye on your children as they play in the yard. Also, in KY windows made of glass have allowed residents to keep tabs on what's happening on their yard without having to go outside.

Using the right materials to construct parts of your house can drastically improve your house's condition, and for residents of Louisville doors made of glass was what made that change possible. So if you feel your house is in need of better lighting, consider using a sliding glass door. To know more about sliding glass doors, you can find info about them on these websites: ehow.com and hubpages.com.

Family Game Night Fun with Kerflip Word Game ? 7 on a Shoestring

family game night fun

Family Game Night Fun

We enjoy playing board games as a family whenever we can find the time to do so. Our favorites are a handful of classics that were around when I was a kid. Personally, I prefer trivia or word games since they appeal to my logical brain. My kids are split as to how they pick their favorites, but it is really about making family game night fun. We were recently introduced to a new word game that we could add to our collection. Kerflip! is ?The Fast-Thinking, Flip-Scoring, Free-For-All Word Game.? It is so much fun. My son, middle daughter, and I are all the wordsmiths in the house so my hubby and oldest daughter have to think quickly to beat us. This game is exactly the type of game I enjoy. Anything that stimulates my brain and gets me thinking quick on my feet has got to be good.

Fast Paced Word Game

The basic concept behind Kerflip! is to make words faster than your opponents. It is a fast paced word game that requires your attention and thinking. After you play it the first time you quickly understand how it is to be played and how to score. The race is then on to find your words before your opponent comes up with one so you can snag the higher score. Even the scoring system is unique in how it is done considering point values decrease as tiles are used and flipped over. And do not be fooled thinking that age matters in this game. Meaning, just because I am older that in no way means my 8 year old could not throw words out quicker than I could see them. She really enjoyed this game! Watch this video from the creator to?understand?exactly?how?to play:

Tile Collection Design

One of my favorite features of the game, other than playing it, is the unique tile?collection?design. As you play, used tiles are easily discarded into a designated slot under the game board. At the end of the game, once all tiles have been played, you simply lift up the playing surface, tilt the box so that the tiles slide into the accompanying box, and then easily pour all the tiles back into the bag for safe keeping. Awesome! I know one of our biggest problems with games is losing pieces. This makes clean up and storage simple and quick.

Ray J is out of the hospital and expected to make a full recovery, following a scare this weekend when the singer thought he had suffered a fatal blood clot.

And fans of the former Kim Kardashian sex tape partner reportedly have Sophie Monk to thank.

According to TMZ sources, the model was staying in a different hotel room from Ray J on Sunday night, but popped in to check on her Prince Reigns campaign mate (we wonder why?!?) and found him on the floor, unresponsive.

Monk proceeded to alert the hotel management, who dialed 911. An ambulance then transported Ray J to the hospital and, fortunately for all involved, nothing especially worrisome was discovered.

News of 'Rickroll' meme death greatly exaggerated

9 hrs.

In what seemed to be a repeat of the great "Hitler Reacts" YouTube takedown of 2010, an original version of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up"?video used to Rickroll Web denizens was removed from YouTube on the grounds of copyright infringement. Thank God it appears to have been only temporary. ?

In case you've just?arrived from the very distant past,?"Rickrolling" is?a "bait-and-switch practice that involves providing a Web link supposedly relevant to the topic at hand, but actually re-directs the viewer to" Astley's 1987 video,?according to Know Your Meme,?scholarly repository of all things.

On Wednesday, TorrentFreak reported that?due to a copyright complaint from AVG Technologies, the?original Rickroll video?has been removed from YouTube," sending the meme-loving Internet into a fit of apoplexy. The YouTube?page features more than a few comments by momentarily?outraged?YouTube users. (The funniest from MrTimthos:?"I was scared. I thought he had finally given me up.")?

But as of this posting, the Astley?video, bearing the title?"RickRoll'D," is very much available, and has over 61 million views. To keep an eye on its status, we're embedding it here:

Even though the video quickly reappeared,?the mystery remains. Was the?"RickRoll'D" video?a victim of YouTube's notoriously problematic Content ID copyright filter, or some other glitch in the system? AVG Technologies is an anti-virus software maker, and is highly unlikely to be a?stakeholder in the Astley music?empire, so?this takedown makes no sense.

Neither AVG or Google, YouTube's parent company, have answered msnbc.com's requests for comment, but one thing ?is clear: YouTube's process of "take down first, ask questions later" still has more than a few bugs.?

The most notorious use of YouTube's Copyright ID system in recent memory?occurred?in April 2010, when?Constantin Films disappeared the "Hitler Reacts" videos from YouTube. ?

"Hitler Reacts"???also known as "Hitler Finds Out About" ??is another popular YouTube phenomenon, in which subtitles from the 2004 German film??Der Untergang??(?Downfall?), are changed to make Hitler rage about everything from Mitt Romney's dog riding on top of the car to the F?hrer's own?thwarted trip to ?Burning Man.?

Oliver Hirschbiegel, the director of this very serious film, is?a self-professed fan of this very silly meme. The producers behind movie, Constantin Films, not so much.?

As EFF noted at the time of the "Hitler Reacts" removals,?once videos are taken down, "YouTube users do have options to respond. But YouTube's procedures for 'removing' videos have created considerable confusion among users."?(You can read EFF's?Guide to YouTube Removals?for details.)

The "Hitler Reacts" parodies all fell under fair use, which permits limited use of copyright material for purposes such as commentary. As such, they are again raging free on YouTube.

However,?Wednesday's "RickRoll'D"?disappearance?may not be a copyright controversy at all.

On YouTube, the policy is take down first, ask questions after people start to complain. A glitch in the Content ID system may be behind the momentary loss of RickRoll'D, EFF attorney Julie Samuels speculated in a phone interview.?

Sometimes, the difference between copyright protection, free speech and?a glitch in the system gets decided after the fact.

There was that time in 2007 when?Prince was less than pleased about ?that baby on YouTube dancing to his barely audible "Let's Go Crazy." YouTube yanked the video in 2007 after receiving a takedown notice from Universal Music Publishing Group, reportedly at the artist?s behest.

The kid?s mom turned to EFF, which cried "Shenanigans!" over Universal?s misuse of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Eventually, the?groundbreaking video got back on YouTube, where it cleared the way for all the "Single Ladies (Put A Ring on It)" babies of today.?

Sometimes the takedowns are more serious than just a Prince song.?

In 2009,?YouTube disabled the entire account of the non-profit group?Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK), following a controversy involving the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Long story short, after the EFF got involved,?the PRCA settled with the charity, paying it $25,000 for the improper removals.

"We want to make sure the rights are protected for those whose speech removed from the Internet for potentially weeks or in some cases longer, especially if that speech is for some reason timely," Samuels told me.?

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about the Internet. Tell her to get a real job on?Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.?

BBQ Safely and Healthfully this Summer | RealFoodTraveler.com

BBQ Safely and Healthfully this Summer

However, health practitioners tell us that barbecuing comes with some hidden dangers. The last thing you want to do is give your guests (or your family) food poisoning, burns or even worse, cancer.

Chicago Healers Practitioner Dr. Martha Howard says that raw or undercooked meat, fish or chicken can cause illnesses like salmonella, e coli and other bugs. Grills can be temperamental and, if handled incorrectly, are prone to explosions and giving people burns. Even more worrisome, charred meat produces three cancer-causing chemicals.

It is easy and simple to keep barbecues light on danger and heavy on fun, says Dr. Howard. Here are her tips for throwing the healthiest and safest barbecue this summer.

The process of barbecuing meat causes the three cancer-causing chemicals:

  • PhlP, which has been proved to cause cancers in rats. An April 2006 presentation at the American Association for Cancer Research showed that when this barbecue/char chemical was added to rats? food, they developed cancerous changes in their intestines, spleens and prostates within four weeks.
  • HCAs (heterocyclic amines). They are also produced when meat is charred. This compound can increase the risk of breast, stomach, colon, and prostate cancer.
  • PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) which are produced by smoking fat from chicken, fish or meat.

The good news? You don?t have to give up your barbecue entirely. Here? are some ways to decrease risks from these cancer-causers and from other barbecue dangers:

Clean the grill?get rid of the old fats

  • Avoid petroleum starters for charcoal. Use a wood starter and stack charcoal up in a two-pound metal can (no paint on the can, please) with the ends cut off. Lift off the can with tongs and spread out the coals when they are well started.
  • Know how to turn a propane grill on and off safely. Avoid a time gap between opening the valve and starting the grill.
  • Wash your hands after touching raw meats and use separate plates and cutting boards for raw and cooked meats. Be sure to wash your hands again before putting on long, heat-proof barbecue gloves.
  • Trim most of that fat?less fat means fewer PAHs.
  • Use marinades?they tend to protect meat from charring. Put marinades on the meat of choice and put all items back in the refrigerator until ready to go. Don?t let meat sit out.
  • Prior to grilling, follow proper pre-cooking instructions, especially for items like raw brats. Avoid taking burgers, chicken or other meats directly from the freezer to the grill.
  • Cut meat and chicken into smaller pieces so they cook thoroughly.
  • Turn down the fire and turn your burgers, steaks, chops, or chicken often, so they cook through, and come out a gorgeous golden brown.
  • Use a meat thermometer to be certain it?s safe to be served.
    • Chicken: 165 degrees.
    • Hamburger: 160 degrees.
    • Pork: 150 degrees.
    • Hot dogs: 140 degrees.
    • Steak 145 degrees for medium rare (only if you know where your steak comes from) and 160 degrees for medium
  • Don?t forget about veggies; throw them on the grill too! ?Make kabobs to incorporate meat with veggies.? Brush all the veggies with oil, cook the onions with the meat, and grill the other vegetables separately. That way the meat gets done, and the vegetables don?t get overcooked.
  • At the end of the barbecue, be sure to put out charcoals or double-check that the propane valve has been turned off.

(AP) ? Food stamp recipients are ripping off the government for millions of dollars by illegally selling their benefit cards for cash ? sometimes even in the open, on eBay or Craigslist ? and then asking the government for replacement cards.

The Agriculture Department wants to curb the practice by giving states more power to investigate people who repeatedly claim to lose their benefit cards.

It is proposing new rules Thursday that would allow states to demand formal explanations from people who seek replacement cards more than three times a year. Those who don't comply can be denied further cards.

"Up to this point, the state's hands have been tied unless they absolutely suspected fraudulent activity," said Kevin Concannon, the department's undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services.

Overall, food stamp fraud costs taxpayers about $750 million a year, or 1 percent of the $75 billion program that makes up the bulk of the department's total budget for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Most fraud occurs when unscrupulous retailers allow customers to turn in their benefits cards for lesser amounts of cash. But USDA officials are also concerned about people selling or trading cards in the open market, including through websites.

Last year, the department sent letters urging eBay and Craigslist to notify customers that it's illegal to buy and sell food stamps. USDA officials followed up last month, saying they are still getting complaints that people are using the websites to illegally market food stamps.

Both eBay and Craigslist have told the government they are actively reviewing their sites for illegal activity and would take down ads offering food stamp benefits for cash. The USDA also has warned Facebook and Twitter about the practice.

South Dakota, Oklahoma, Washington, D.C., Minnesota and Washington state have the highest percentage of recipients seeking four or more replacement cards over a year. But USDA officials said that doesn't necessarily indicate a high rate of fraud. All states are required by law to reissue lost or stolen cards to those who are eligible for benefits.

Wyoming, Idaho, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Alabama have the lowest percentage of households requesting four or more cards in a 12-month period.

In North Carolina, the state already issues warning letters to people who request four replacement cards in a year, letting them know that officials are monitoring them closely. Dean Simpson, chief of economic family services for the North Carolina Division of Social Services, said the new rules would give her state even more of a boost in curbing food stamp fraud.

"I think it would help with the trafficking and let individuals know they are being observed and watched," said Simpson, who oversees the state's distribution of food stamps.

More than 46 million people receive food stamps, nearly half of them children. The average monthly benefit is $132 per person.

Benefit cards work like debit cards, allowing users to swipe them for food purchases at some 231,000 stores around the country that are authorized to take part in the food stamp program. Once a card is reported lost or stolen, it can be disabled immediately. But the USDA does not require photo identification, since several members of a family, including children, may use the cards at different times.

Concannon stressed that the USDA wants to be sensitive to vulnerable people who may lose their cards for innocent reasons. While it may sound suspicious for someone to lose a card two or three times a year, food stamp recipients include many people who are homeless or have dementia or mental illness, he said.

"Our concern is that in many instances, it may point to a trafficking issue," he said.

Last year, about 850,000 people were investigated for possible food stamp fraud. About 2,000 stores were sanctioned for illegal conduct, and 1,200 stores were permanently removed from the food stamp program.

Large supermarkets are seldom involved in illegal activity, Concannon said. The vast majority of fraud is found in smaller shops and convenience stores.

The USDA is currently developing tougher sanctions and penalties for retailers engaging in food stamp fraud. It is also taking steps to make sure that people disqualified from the program for illegal activity are not able to use it again in other states.

The five stages of launching a successful Internet startup | Site ...

Every Internet startup goes through five distinct stages on the way to making money and succeeding. This article shows you how to identify and guide an Internet startup through each stage and succeed early.

Startups can be any type of enterprise ranging from a blog about baking, to an affiliate marketing website, to an eCommerce store. Whatever your startup does, it will go through the same five stages on the way to success.

Identifying and understanding each of these stages in your own business can help you to tackle the right business challenges at the right time.

If you are thinking about starting an Internet business, or have just started one, then it is likely that you already know that coming up with a good idea, and identifying a need or niche to fill is crucial - so I won't rehash that here.

Instead, I'm going to look at Internet startups from a different angle. I'm going to tell you what you "experience", what to look out for, and where to find more information once you've identified where in the business life-cycle your enterprise is.

1. Your Internet startup is launched

Once you've had your business brainwave and put in the sleepless nights putting everything together, building a website, researching the competition, learning about the market, it comes time to launch your business.

Characterized by: Lack of customers and traffic. Little to no revenue. Technical issues. Bugs. Procedural problems. Poor design. Poor implementation.

Strategy: At this point, you need to work hard to ensure that the visitor or customer experience is improved at an exponential rate. Recognize that it is often not possible to make a startup perfect out-of-the-box, and endeavor to eagerly take on advice and criticism in order to improve your business offering.

For a blogger this could mean, rethinking your writing style. For an affiliate marketer, this could mean offering more high quality content with less advertising. For an eCommerce site, this could mean upgrading to a better quality eCommerce shopping cart platform.

Further reading: In this early stage of your startup, everything should be about learning. Learn whatever you can. Follow people in social media. Read news articles. But, above all, learn from the practical experience of running your own Internet startup.

Here are some resources you'll find useful:

2. Your Internet startup is operational

With many if not most of the bugs ironed out, some more efficient procedures in place, and a bit of experience, you are ready to start operating in earnest.

Characterized by: Low traffic. Low income. Occasional bug fixes. Cosmetic improvements to the site.

Strategy: Reach out to your niche. Seek to make relationships with influential people in your industry. Make connections and strategic business alliances.

Often marketing directly to your customers can be too expensive for an early stage startup. It can be far more rewarding to connect with people who have greater trust and authority in the market and get them to evangelize your business.

If you want to learn more about how to make industry, niche and strategic connections online, then the following articles and resources will help:

3. Finding clients and building a revenue stream

With some decent industry connections and a bit of trust built up with some influential people, bloggers, entrepeneurs, journalists and news sites, you can start to market to your customers in earnest.

Characterized by: Low traffic. Low revenue. Frustration at inability to penetrate the market. Frustration at not being able to get sufficient coverage or generate "buzz".

Strategy: Marketing. Marketing. Marketing. Do everything possible to drive sales and revenue.

It's at this point that many startups close their doors because they didn't focus exclusively on building a solid stream of revenue. Without an income sufficient to meet your operational costs (yes, this applies to bloggers too) then your startup is not sustainable in the long run.

If you want to learn more about Internet marketing, driving traffic, and converting with a high ROI (Return on Investment) then these articles and resources will help:

4. Nurturing and encouraging growth

If you have done a good job of marketing, advertising and promoting your Internet startup then you can shift the business marketing campaigns up a gear.

Characterized by: Increased revenue. Increased traffic. Potential technical problems - scalability, hardware, etc. Unsolicited coverage and social buzz.

Strategy: Marketing. Marketing. Marketing. Start diversifying your marketing strategy to include existing fans, followers and customers. Offer promotions, discounts and deals. Get into the news. Leverage previous successes to gain additional coverage. Build further trust and authority.

Improve and upgrade. It is likely that up 'til now you haven't had a moment to implement all the new features and system improvements the business needs. Now is the time. Invest income back into the business.

Scale, and grow.

Further reading:
With your business starting to achieve real growth and financial stability, you'll have to think carefully about the direction you want to take. The following resources and articles can help:

5. Competing in the market

Arriving on the stage, you will be greeted by stiff competition in your market. It's likely that there are a few competitors none too happy that your growth has eroded their market share. This is where it gets fun...

Characterized by: Strategic business decisions. Competitive research and analysis. Focus on both existing customer or fan base as well as new opportunities for growth.

Strategy: Don't neglect the customers, readers, fans and followers who got you where you are. Don't diversify unless you know that you can continue to meet the needs of the people who constitute the livelihood of the business.

With one eye firmly on your existing customers, look around for growth opportunities and strategic moves that can help to out-compete other businesses in your industry.

Remember that no business is immune to change. Especially Internet businesses. If you don't continue to adapt and grow, your customers will eventually be drawn elsewhere.

Take a break. Take some family time. Celebrate a job well done. Then, get back to work.

Elements that Keep Your Home Cool under a Metal Roof

Metal, regardless of alloy or mixture, is known for having the property to conduct or radiate heat fast. When used as a roofing material, it can radiate heat into the house, causing more energy consumption for air conditioning and ventilation units. Surprisingly, metal continues to become a roofing material of choice around the world despite this drawback.

People choose metal roofing for its light weight, durability, easy-install characteristic, and recyclability. It is hard to ignore these qualities, which are rare in other roofing materials, just because a metal roof radiates heat into the house quickly. Instead, innovations in roofing design are employed to counter heat absorption and radiation. There are several elements that keep your home cool despite having a metal roof.

Underlayment

Before metal sheeting is laid over the rafters, an underlayment is installed to provide a partition between the roof and the house. This layer serves as a protection against climatic elements, especially heat from the sun. Some of the most common commercially available underlayment materials are made from rubberized asphalt, organic fiberglass, and synthetic.

Mechanical Vent

In states with a humid subtropical or hot climate, especially during the summer, having a thick underlayment and a fully-functioning air conditioning unit may not be enough to counter heat moving into the house. A mechanical vent is required to blow away hot air forming within the deck and eventually seeping through the pores on the ceiling. This device improves the energy efficiency of homes by helping minimize constant use of the air conditioning system.

Ceiling

Aside from hiding wires and trusses and providing a surface for lighting fixtures, your home's ceiling serves as a secondary underlayment. Roofers Maryland and other prominent states recommend decide on the thickness of the ceiling material to be installed based on the level of heat to be countered. The ceiling keeps the heat accumulating within the deck from directly seeping through the house. The wood trusses and decking also help the ceiling shield the house against heat.

Pitch

This is not a definite material but a design which contributes to the minimization of heat transfer into the house. With sufficient pitch, it will take longer time for heat to travel from the metal roof to the deck; before heat reaches your home interior, it already cooled down. A roofers Maryland has to offer recommends high pitches for roofing to increase heat resistance in homes.

Questions:

1. Paleo and lifting made me interested in science/evolutionary biology? need a little help

Office Inmate says:
Hi Robb,

Been listening to the podcast; have been eating Paleo for about a year, my first introduction to the idea was Art Devany?s book and some interviews he did.

Paleo plus working out has rekindled? check that? kindled my interest in science and more specifically anthropology and evolutionary biology.

Haven?t taken a science class in ten years, I?m essentially looking for reading list recommendations for good books written for the layman on evolutionary anthropology and biology. ?Hopefully a few titles to get me going that are written with a degree of stylistic quality that will get me turning the pages.

At this point, my knowledge of this stuff starts and ends with a couple books for the Paleo crowd and Helen Fisher?s books (which I thought were pretty good).

Thanks much

?

2. Baby Teeth

Denny says:

Hey there Rob and Greg!

Greetings and salutations from the Great White North!!? That?s Canada for those that are directionally and geographically challenged!

I am having a major dilemma about this entire fluoride deal and deciding what is the best thing to do for my 13 month old!?!? She is currently working with some 7 teeth, possibly 8 by the time we?re done here?!

I see a holistic dentist and he is an anti-amalgam purist and a very well read man.? He is of the mindset that fluoride in the drinking water, albeit deleterious and not necessary for older adults, is necessary for young children to be drinking fluoridated/chlorinated tap water to prevent tooth decay and cavities.? His son, a holistic minded chiropractor, agrees that the PROS to drinking tap water for the health of a child?s teeth out way the CONS.

He instructed me that it?s the action of ingesting the fluoride internally that helps to build the tooth matrix. It has a different effect than external fluoridated pastes or rinses. ? He cited historical evidence that years ago Toronto fluoridated it?s water and Montreal decided against fluoridation.? Two cities of equal size and after a few years of tracking, cavities and tooth decay in unfluoridated Montreal, outnumbered Toronto by 10 to 1?

My question is, does living a Primal/Paleo lifestyle supplemented with raw milk home-made baby formula, offer our child any protection against tooth decay by drinking only Reverse Osmosis defluoridated water?

Do we bite the bullet and do the tap water as opposed to R/O water for the first 10+(?) years to set our child up right against to decay??

Any advice or ideas on right from wrong and what we should do are greatly appreciated!

Thanks for all your great work to save the world and keep it lean and mean!

3. HIGH IRON

Brian says:
hey, hoping this gets on the show, should be a quick hit.

I found out I carry one of the genes for Hemochromatosis, so I store excess iron. Is there an upper limit of red meat/organ meats I should eat, say per week? Because that would suck.

?

4. Will I forever rue the day I discovered weight training?

Mike says:
Long time listener, first time questioner here. ?While you?ve brushed on this topic, it?s been a while and I really want to hear G?s take on this.

As a 35 year old father of 6, my days of being any kind of competitive athlete are behind me. ?However, having re-discovered strength training and crossfit-style metcons a couple years ago, I love the sense of accomplishment that comes with seeing my strength numbers go up. ?My goal in working out is to be strong and healthy and set a good example for my sons and daughters (ages 11 through 12 weeks).

As much satisfaction as I get from pulling heavy weights, I don?t want this ?hobby? to be something I regret later in life. ?A friend of mine who?s an orthopedic surgeon recently quit crossfit because he thinks heavy weights are ultimately going to be detrimental to long term health. ?He?s a good friend, a pretty strong guy and sports medicine specialist, so I don?t think I can dismiss him the way I can the overweight doctor who says squats are bad for your knees. ?He says that the force from heavy weights over time ultimately destroys cartilage and that when it?s gone, it?s gone. He says it?s not a matter of using good form; it?s just force over time.

I hate it when people give me advice I don?t want to hear, but I don?t know any old weightlifters. ?Louis Simmons has had some injuries but he seems to be doing okay. ?I know football players have sore joints later in life, but I have to think that?s more the impact than the heavy weights. ?Are retired olympic lifters in constant pain past age 60?

I generally eat well (paleo + dairy fats, limited sugar, etc) and I?m not training to compete in the Crossfit games. ?I?m not really training to compete at anything beyond not sucking at life. ?But I love to lift heavy and imagine myself lifting heavier. ?I can bench and clean 300, squat 400 and pull close to 500 and I?d love to see another 100 on all those numbers before I start to consider myself strong enough.

What sorts of things should I be thinking about in balancing my training goals with overall health and longevity in particular?

?

5. Anti-Cancer Paleo Goals

Kate says:
Hello Robb,

I?ve tried my best to read all of your (and many others?) commentary on paleo and cancer prevention, via your books, blogs and podcasts. ?I enjoyed your rant about genetic testing, specifically, genome versus phenome expression. ?I tested positive for BRCA mutations, and my family has a massive history of breast cancer. ?After a pretty simple transition to a strict paleo over the last three months, I feel fantastic and intend to stick with it for the long haul. ?I?m almost 30, and my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at my age. ?I want to do all I can in terms of prevention.

My questions are: 1) In your opinion, what should my goals be- should I shoot for a ketogenic diet? Is this irrelevant in an anti-cancer perspective? ?2) What supplements would you recommend? (Currently, I only take D-3, as fish oil gives me terrible acne. ?I will probably add primrose oil, or maybe try a higher quality, liquid fish oil once I can afford it.) ?3) Do you agree with William Li?s ideas per his recent TEDtalk about anti-angiogenesis foods, if they were paleo-fyied? Omit soy, etc. ?4) Cancer likes sugar. ?Should I limit fruit? ?5) Omit all dairy- Kerrygold butter and raw cream?

Though my sister and I were originally tested to keep our mother off our backs, so to speak, we now have MRIs and biopsies on a bi-annual basis. ?Anything that I could do to limit the stress/cortisol involved in this on-going process would be very appreciated. ?Believing that I?ve done what I could would go a long way for me in that regard.

p.s. ?I apologize in advance if I butchered any of the aforementioned science terms- I?m way out of my field on this stuff!

Thanks!

?

6. Autoimmune Snowflake Club ? Represent!

Grayson says:
Hi Guys,

Been at this Paleo gig for about 6 months now and am feeling truly amazing. My most profound thanks to Robb and everyone involved in pushing the diet further into the public consciousness, you are saving lives. I was diagnosed with Crohn?s about 8
years ago after a good run as an elite level cyclist (sound familiar?) and for the first time in my life I feel like I have it under control, and that?s where my question comes in. If i phrase it right, I think it could be helpful and clarifying to a lot of autoimmune people out there (I know you guys bang your heads against the wall with all the scatter-shot AI questions). It centers on the on-again/off again, flare-up nature of most autoimmune disorders. Here goes: The diet, and even more so the AI protocol, is no doubt an immediate benefit to anyone suffering from an AI disorder. But because the nature of the disease is not constant it?s tough to know exactly how much of the benefit is from the diet, and how much is from the disease just potentially trending into a remission phase. In my experience, I?ve gone as much as 2 years without any significant acivity at all, and as little as 1 month between nasty flare-ups. For this reason, the ?re-introduce, and see how you look feel and perform? mantra isn?t enough (no disrespect!). After strict AI protocol for a few months, I currently will eat some corn tortillas now and again, and I eat the bejesus out of my backyard eggs, ?and they haven?t done me any harm yet, but a 6 or even 12 month remission period isn?t unheard of for me even when I was eating pizza everyday.
So I guess the heart of the question is, because the ?look feel and perform? can sometimes be a liar to an AI person, I?ve thought that I need to be more numbers-based for health markers. As in, ?well, I introduced nightshades and I feel okay, but my CRP went up, so maybe it?s a bad idea.? Any thoughts? If so, where should one begin? Just CRP? Anything else? My head starts to spin when I think of everything I could be blood-testing for, and the $ for the tests are coming straight outta the doomsday fund (read: miniscule savings account). Are there any *other* markers besides blood and overall sense of well-being that might be useful to an AI person?
Lastly, and I know this is already long, I wanted to give a shout-out to Alan Schachter at CrohnsDad.com. Maybe you could take a look at the site and give it a thumbs-up if you like it? This is a normal dude with a daughter with Crohns who has gone on a relentless quest to dig up as much info as he can about Crohn?s and autoimmune in general and share it with the world. The site is impeccably organized, with links to you (that?s how I heard about you), Kresser, Deans, etc and he is truly gifted at putting Fasano and other studies into layman terms. For me, at the end of my rope and about to go on Humira, he was truly a voice in the wilderness. His site, if only as a starting point, has the potential to help thousands of people if its profile
could be raised a little.
Thanks!

7. EMS Fitness Question

Justin says:
Robb and Greg,

Background: I am a paramedic for a great EMS agency in rural Washington State. We are staffed by 9 employees and 23 volunteers. ?We have a good employee health program that includes paid exercises time for staff. Since my boss and co-workers know that I am a huge paleo/ meat/barbell/mobility geek I have been asked to coach group style fitness classes. We have retired firefighters, current firefighters, smokejumpers, real estate agents, a hot air balloon pilot, retired teachers and the list goes on. The point is we have a wide range of ages and athletic abilities. We also have some big orthopedic issues that prevent some of the folks from getting into basic positions: full squats and pressing overhead to name two big ones. In fact, there are only a couple of individuals who can go to full depth on a squat. ?I have put together a program that lasts about an hour. We start with some light walking, rowing, running, or biking. We then move into some dynamic stretching followed by mobility work and foam rolling. After the ?juices are flowing? I have them squat, press, and pull. Most people are either doing the work without weight or assisted with bands.

Question: I have heard Greg mention a couple of times that he used to work as an EMT and thought since he knows the demands of EMS you gentlemen might be able to put your heads together and comment on our program and how you might tweek it to make it better. My agency is also willing to pay for me to go to training and want your input on what training might be best for us (e.g. Rippetoe?s Starting Strength, MovNat, or even, please say yes, the Catalyst Olympic Weightlifting Seminar).
Although I didn?t get out my Diana Hacker book I hope my grammar is up to snuff for Greg.

Thanks for the information you provide,
Justin

8. Type 2 Diabetic and Protein Requirements

Kim says:
Thanks so much for continuing to keep us all informed. ?In Dr. Bernstein?s Diabetes Solution he writes that diabetics should limit their protein consumption to about .8 ? 1 gram of protein per kilogram of desired body weight, which would put me at about 47 ? 59 grams of protein per day or 7 ? 10 oz per day. He says that eating too much protein can raise your blood sugar if you are a diabetic. I have Type 2, I?m not on meds and have lowered my A1C from 11.9 to 5.7 and lowered fasting sugars with diet alone since March of 2011. I only eat about 20-30 grams per day of carbs. What is your opinion on eating this amount of protein? I heard in one of your earlier podcasts that you recommend 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. I currently weight about 212 and should weigh about 130. I?m 5?4?. ?Since the end of May 2011, I have lost about 84 pounds.

(AP) ? Satellite imagery shows North Korea is upgrading its old launch site in the secretive country's northeast to handle larger rockets, like space launch vehicles and intercontinental missiles, a U.S. institute claimed Tuesday.

The U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies said the upgrade of the Musudan-ri site began last summer and reflects North Korean determination to expand its rocket program.

The U.S. and other nations are worried such rockets could be developed to deliver nuclear weapons.

North Korea on Tuesday vowed to push ahead with its nuclear program because of what it called U.S. hostility. The international community is pressuring North Korea to refrain from conducting what would be its third nuclear test, following a failed attempt in mid-April to launch a satellite into space.

That launch, using its biggest rocket to date, the Unha-3, was from a more sophisticated site at Sohae on the country's northwestern coast.

An April 29 aerial image of Musudan-ri on the opposite coast shows the initial stages of construction of a launch pad and rocket assembly building that could support rockets at least as big as the Unha-3, the institute told The Associated Press. A crane is visible where the launch pad is being built 1.1 miles from the old one. At the current pace of construction, the facilities should be operational by 2016-2017, the institute said.

"This major upgrade program, designed to enable Musudan-ri to launch bigger and better rockets far into the future, represents both a significant resource commitment and an important sign of North Korea's determination," said Joel Wit, editor of the institute's website, 38 North.

The institute says the assembly building shows similarities to one at the Semnan launch complex in Iran, which has a long history of missile cooperation with North Korea. But, officials there say it's premature to conclude the two nations cooperated in designing the new facility.

South Korea's National Intelligence Service said Tuesday it cannot comment on whether it has detected any new activity at the Musudan-ri launch site.

The upgrade could be of particular concern to Japan, as rockets launched from the site in the past have flown east over that country. The flight path from Sohae heads south over the Pacific Ocean in the direction of Southeast Asia, avoiding Japan and South Korea.

The April rocket launch drew U.N. Security Council condemnation, as the launch violated an existing ban. Similar technology is used for ballistic missiles. The North, however, is not believed to have mastered how to wed a nuclear device to a missile.

The top U.S. envoy on North Korea, Glyn Davies, who is meeting this week with counterparts from Japan, South Korea and China, warned Monday that the North conducting an atomic test would unify the world in seeking swift, tough punishment. Both of its previous nuclear tests, in 2006 and 2009, followed rocket launches.

A separate analysis of satellite images of a site that North Korea has used for its nuclear tests suggests it has ramped up work there over the past month. James Hardy, IHS Jane's Asia-Pacific specialist, said in a statement that there has been heightened activity at the northeastern Punggye-ri site, including mining carts, excavation equipment and a large amount of debris taken from inside a tunnel and piled around its entrance. The most recent image was from May 9.

In its statement Tuesday, in which North Korea vowed to push ahead with its nuclear program, it made no direct threat of a nuclear test and said it was open to dialogue. An analyst, Koh Yu-hwan at Seoul's Dongguk University, said the statement, from the North's Foreign Ministry, was a message that "the U.S. should come to the dialogue table (with North Korea) if it wants to stop its nuclear test."

The 2006 and 2009 long-range rocket launches that preceded the North's previous nuclear tests were from Musudan-ri. Citing earlier satellite imagery of the site, the U.S.-Korea Institute said land-clearing for the new facilities there began in the fall, and work has proceeded at a fast pace for eight months.

The latest image, from a commercially operated satellite, shows four concrete footings on one side of the launch pad that appear to be for a gantry that would prop up a rocket at launch. It has bigger dimensions than the gantry at the more sophisticated launch site at Sohae.

On another side of the launch pad there is a deep "flame trench" to capture the blast from a launched rocket. Slightly further away, on either side of the launch pad, are two separate buildings designed to enclose the fuel and oxidizer tanks that would funnel propellant into the rocket.

Satellite imagery also shows that about 70 homes, five larger buildings and many sheds in the nearby village of Taepodong have been razed and foundations laid for a large T-shaped structure that appears intended for assembling rockets. A road is under construction that would lead from this building to the launch site, 1.2 miles away.

The building's dimensions are larger than at the comparable structure at Sohae, and the existing one at Musudan-ri, the institute said.

A State Department spokesperson declined to comment on the institute's findings Tuesday, describing it as an intelligence matter.
